Sundance 2006 Title Peek

Jeffrey Wells exclusively reports first on 22 accepted Sundance films:

I have also reordered them into a Top Ten Buzz list and Others...

1. The Black Dahlia - Brian DePalma's period crime thriller with Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johanson, Hilary Swank, Aaron Eckhardt
2. Fur - Secretary director Steven Shainberg's Diane Arbus biopic with Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey, Jr., from Picturehouse
3. The Tiger and the Snow - Robert Benigni's movie on the love-struck Italian poet immersed in the American invasion of Iraq
4. Friends With Money - Lovely & Amazing director Nicole Holofcener's relationship drama with Jennifer Aniston, Frances McDormand, Scott Caan
5. The Passion of the Clerks - Kevin Smith's sequel to his Sundance legend with Brian O'Halloran, Jason Mewes, Jeff Anderson and Smith
6. Shortbus - Hedwig & The Angry Inch director John Cameron Mitchell's long awaited "X-rated" second film about several New Yorkers "exploring" each other during a power outage
7. The Aura - Nine Queens director Fabiane Bielinsky's film about a taxidermist involved in criminal intrigue
8. Art School Confidential - Ghost World director Terry Zwigoff's sardonic comedy about a young guy (Max Minghella) who enrolls in art school for curious fame-related reasons, with John Malkovich, Anjelica Huston, Jim Broadbent
9. Flakes - Heather director Michael Lehmann's quirky-behavior comedy with Aaron Stanford and Zooey Deschanel
10. Candy - Neil Armfield's relationship drama with red-hot Heath Ledger, Abbie Cornish and Geoffrey Rush
11. Klimt - The last years of Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, with John Malkovich, Stephen Dillane and Saphron Burrows

Others... (which doesn't mean they won't supercede the "hotter" titles)

The Hawk is Dying - Julian Goldberger's Florida-set drama with Paul Giamatti and Michael Pitt
Awake - Joby Harold's Weinstein Company thriller with Hayden Christensen, Sigourney Weaver, Jessica Alban
0430 - A totally non-verbal Singapore-produced film from director-writer Royston Tan, about a friendship between an 11 year-old boy and a man in his 30s
Brother's Shadow - Todd Yellin's Brooklyn-set drama about a black-sheep type (Scott Cohen) trying to step into the shoes of his deceased older sibling
City of Sand and Stone - Nanda Anan's adventure piece about an American woman (Kelli Garner) unravelling some sort of mystery in India, with Justin Theroux and Frank Langella
Fast Track - A Weinstein Co. comedy from director Jesse Peretz, with Jason Bateman, Amanda Peet, Paul Rudd and Mia Farrow
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints - Dito Montiel's New York-based drama with Chazz Palmintieri, Rosario Dawon, Robert Downey, Jr., and produced by Downey and Trudie Styler (i.e., Mrs. Sting)
Love Talk - Lee Yoon-Ki's Korean-American drama set in Los Angeles
Shut Up and Sing - Bruce Leddy's meditative comedy about an a capella singing group having a reunion;
What God Knows - Carlos Borado's Brazilian drama with Diego Luna and Alicia Braga
Stephanie Daley - Hilary Brougher's drama about infanticide with Tilda Swinton and Amber Tamblyn.

And I'll add this title - The Notorious Bettie Page - Marry Harron directs and co-writes (With Gunievere Turner) this cheeky biopic on the 50s pin-up legend, played to great acclaim by Gretchen Mol.

Glad to see Fur on the list. Looking forward to it :). I didn't know it had any buzz.

soooo tired of the "independent Film Festival" that Sundance calls itself supporting big budget, name actor present, films and not the Independent Filmmaker. Where is the love?? Where is the Independent filmmaker?

Posted by: genya at November 27, 2005 08:13 PM

Haven't all the features basically been announced now? There are more films from that list that haven't been announced as part of the lineup than films that have.

Posted by: djk813 [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 1, 2005 09:36 PM

Of the 22 titles listed, seven actually made Sundance's lineup. Wells, on his blog, has already disowned the list.
