Continuing to polish Criterion's Image
After the b.o. blank fired by Lord of War, Lions Gate's stock price has fallen, complicating its offer for vid distrib Image Entertainment. Image continues its absorption of Home Vision Entertainment, including taking over distribution of the Criterion Collection. Video Business reports that Image "is eager to push the premium DVD line into fresh accounts, such as mass merchants and rentailers... Although boasting elite audio-visual quality and exclusive bonus features, Criterion’s frequent foreign film releases have crimped its appeal. "Rentailers" have generally avoided heavily stocking titles, because owning the lush, deluxe packaging is part of Criterion’s allure... “Whether it’s Borders or Best Buy, they are coming to us asking how can we differentiate ourselves when everyone has Batman Begins?” Buchalter said. “We do need to get them past the price point. … But Criterion is a great differentiator. And there is a really nice margin with it.”"
