Promise Lands at Warner Indie
Warner Independent's plotting a May release for Chen Kaige's The Promise, picking up one of the shorter, Westernized cuts of the epic, according to CRI Online. The third highest grossing title in mainland China (behind Titanic and Hero) was re-cut by Weinsteinco several times between Cannes 2005 and December, when the Weinsteins "returned distribution rights to producers Moonstone Entertainment and China Film Group after a difference of opinion over awards strategy. Now Harvey [Weinstein]'s former Miramax lieutenant Mark Gill, who heads WiP, has the spoils. It is understood WiP will release a shorter, 102-minute Western cut. The Asian [version is] 121 minutes."
