Kamikaze Girls (2004) ***

Twerpy to a fault, Tetsuya Nakashima’s Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma monogatari), set in a small town outside of Tokyo, is a bright, chipper adventure for two Japanese teen girl popstars (Kyoko Fukada, Anna Tsuchiya), with a dazzling range of restless eyeball kicks studding their Lolita-esque adventures, including bursts of animation inspired by shojo comics, and a keen sense of subcultural mayhem, from motorcycle iconography to Japanese street fashion to teen pop pictures to real-life teen girl rebellion.

As one character asserts, “Fashion taught me how to live. When I see clothes, they speak to me. They make me want to be worthy of them.” Kamikaze Girls is bubblegum that never loses its sugar. 102m.
