Simmons, Chappelle and Cult of Pryor to Sweep Aspen Comedy Fest

Last weekend's NYC-Richard Pryor love-in is seems to be heading west to Aspen, where The Reeler hears this year's US Comedy Arts Festival plans a retrospective of Pryor's NBC variety show and its impact on African-American comedy. This comes in conjunction with the festival's just-announced tribute to hip hop impresario Russell Simmons (right); the USCAF's Freedom of Speech Award is set to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Simmons' Def Comedy Jam.
And the award event sounds like it might actually be a decent trade-off fro traveling to godforesaken Aspen: Dave Chappelle, Cedric the Entertainer, Bill Bellamy and Adele Givens will join Elvis Mitchell in celebrating Simmons' work. I guess that could be funny. Chappelle will also do a Q&A following a screening of his Michel Gondry collaboration Block Party, as will (on a totally unrelated and relatively boring note) Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston following a 10th anniversary screening of Swingers. As though you could not just stay here and find three schlubs to wax nostalgic for free. Stop yawning!
