Glimpsing opening night (content)

Opening night, the indie spirit's reflected just below the slopes in the condo where the indieWIRE party burns brightly: all of Park City could be a provisional cooler as partygoers' BYOB makes a night run down the cool mounds of snow near clustered smokers.

Hugging an upstairs railing, a couple of filmmakers and I fixed upon pair of correspondents playing to their TV camera on the dance floor. (I'm tempted to post the video.) He's dancing to her, as well as the viewers at home. The buttons on the shirt were soon ripped off; additional images for a modest ransom. Out of that context, I'm impressed by his expression, encapsulating a sort of fierce resistance and acting-out against the generalized anxiety in thin mountain air.

At the indieWIRE condo chili party, publicist-evangelist Mickey Cottrell likes a good joke as much as you or I.

Good signage: always a Party Plus! Opening night party was thronged, even at the bar for the mixed absinthe drinks; many of the assembled were local, contributors or not, on Park City's biggest party of the night. Plus The Dude was there. (D., if you're into the brevity thing.)

I'm sure I had the same expression after turning away from this grid of available and sold-out screenings.

The stairway between the second and level of the opening night party at the Lodge Of The Haven Of The Place You Get Turned Around Twice To Find was emblazoned with the projected word, "STORYTIME." It turned out to be a good place to loiter, opening night's Rick's Cafe Americain... Everybody comes to Storytime Staircase.

The duo of cultural correspondents from PCTV made the rounds, including sampling ice cream for their ubiquitous cameraman. Were they broadcasting live?

Hardly a day in and the huge plastic pockets on lanyards that are your festival pass start to take on the weight of tickets and postcards and biz cards... The stark, striking image from Ry Russo-Young's You're Gonna Miss Me is undiminished by a Park City Transit Map positioned like a flag in the upside-down signal of distress.

I want to make a hierarchy of the boots of Sundance. Unfortunately, it was too loud to shoot a quick video interview with the woman planted into these furries.
