Scary
Just saw two kids on The View who are having weight loss sugery. Both were about 25 -40 pounds overweight. Both were sitting next to parents who were built on the heavy side, so there was clear genetic predisposition.
Have we really gotten to the point where dropping 30 pounds is about surgery and not diet & exercise... especially when these kids are never going to be thin by the magazine cover standard, but can only hope not to have fat rolling over their belts?

The problem with these people is not an extra thirty pounds. It's a combination of distorted self-image, a media cocktail of embarassment and entitlement, and good old-fashioned fat-ass laziness. And any parent who allows their child to get this sort of elective surgery? You can bet they're a big part of the problem.
Do these kids think their life will be changed after one day of surgery? They probably do. But they suffer from a pathology that will always, always find more flaws that need to be fixed.

real easy. u put the kids on a low fat diet. no junk food. no fast food. u make them do an hour a day of workouts. light weights, cardio, sports.
just because they're getting surgery doesn't mean in 2 yrs the weight won't come back on.

Let's not be so quick to assume the problem is genetic. True, for some people, genetics play a major role in their body type, but it's far more likely that the parents live an unhealthy lifestyle and the overweight kids are also a product of that lifestyle.
Hopefully, this family will come to their senses and take up more practical measures.

Kids now don't want to do the hard work. It takes dedication to be in good shape. Takes hard work. The easy way out never works.

I'm sorry, but any doctor who does an irreversible gastric bypass surgery on someone under 18 has no professional ethics.

Stupid diet and exercise. Where's that damn fat pill? A real weight-loss drug would make a company billions if they could just figure out how to keep the test subjects from having heart attacks.

The kind of doctor that does this to kids? Should be sued for malpractice.

Because my severe sleep apnea is compounded by my weight, my doctor sent me to a surgeon that specializes in something called "lap rings," which is a less invasive and extreme procedure than gastric bypass. Believe it or not, the surgeon told me I wasn't fat enough to have the surgery! That had to be a first, especially in L.A.!
