Extras Hits Stride
Ricky Gervais' Extras on HBO has been pleasant enough. But this last week's episode, featuring Gervais' character playing the Genie in Aladdin on stage is the first episode of true genius. Absolute genius.
It is very British. And finally, it is not obsessed with actors waiting around for their scenes to happen. I loved Kate Winslet's cameo, but the circumstances around it weren't that great. But here, it is, simply, the life of a bit part actor and the people he and his best friend (Ashley Jensen) run into.
Scene after scene after scene... subtle and brilliant on second and third viewing.

The one-two punch of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Extras has been the best comedy hour on TV. CYE has been consistently funny this season. (Larry's excitement about getting his name on the "Big Board" was classic.)
Extras is simply extraordinary. The episode involving Jensen not wanting to offend her black date was cringe-inducing comic perfection. San Jackson's smooth cameo was icing on the cake.
I only wish the show had more episodes. Now if only HBO could hurry up with the new season of The Wire.

I also really enjoying "Extras" on HBO. I initially missed the ensemble nature of "The Office" but I've really warmed to the show since then.
My favorite cameo has been Kate Winslet as well . . . funny not so much because she plays the opposite of herself but because she gets to act *more* like her real self and not the stuffy roles she's often does so well on film.
I also think "Rome" has been great in the past few weeks as well.

Fall TV is so crowded this year, I decided to wait until Extras was finished airing and watch it in December over On Demand when nothing else is on. Looking forward to it, though.
And damn, yes, The Wire... when is that coming back, anyway? And Deadwood not until summer? They should find a way to bring back Rome before 2007, too. HBO is getting rather full of itself with its belief that viewers will wait forever. A year between the end of a season and the beginning of the next should be the max, IMO, absent some extraordinary circumstances. Waiting for some of these HBO shows to get their next season on the air has become like waiting for Star Wars sequels (back when I cared) or the next Harry Potter book -- a 2-3 year wait.
If HBO didn't have an HD channel, I'd consider cancelling it and watching the shows I want on DVD (which would be rented from Netflix, because HBO's DVD sets are way too expensive).

Ricky G can do no wrong. I can watch The Office every single day and it never gets old.

Ashley Jensen is a find as Maggie.

Why ARE all of HBOs tv box sets so expensive? It costs more to get 13 episodes of something than it does to get 24 of another from a different network (ones that don't live off DVD revenue I suppose)

You're dead-on, Dave. I had to pause my DVR during the "Tan Blob" opening argument. I haven't laughed that hard in quite some time.

His acting as the gay genie? Priceless.

The episode with Ben Stiller was the best one of a too short season. Utterly hilarious.
