Any thoughts on the link from Drudge to Foxnews (ie Friedman?)

and just to comment on it, I've never really "gotten" all the negativity towards NBR. DP,etc. bitch about NBR but rarely get into specifics. The specifics in the fox story give me a better understanding.

I think DP's bitch is that they're a tiny group of entertainment-industry hangers-on, not an actual Board or group of critics or anything.

Why the nasty dig at the NBR, Poland, when just a month or so ago you were willing to cut them some slack due to their change in leadership?

They're whores. All whores for the money/recognition.

I am willing to cut them slack... and they actually have to earn some more too. So far, little has changed.

aww, the NBR are sorta fun. They're so wacky and at times make NO sense (Charlize and Paul Giamatti break throughts in 2003? LOL) and are so please-like-us that they reward everything they desire.

Personally I think they'll give BP to Memoirs of a Geisha, if not that then Brokeback. Actress to Joan Allen (She has three films and they love that), Actor to Heath Ledger (although, he could easily get Breakthrough Actor along with Keira Knightley for Breakthrough Actress), Director to James Mangold and the only direct thing I think they will give Munich is Breakthrough Actor for Eric Bana.

I did a whole rundown of predictions on my blog. Because I can. And predicting is fun.

How could Ledger or Bana ever get a "Breathru" award? Not like they each haven't made tons of movies or anything.

So are you going to pass on reporting on the Golden Globes, the ultimate disreputable sellout organization that hands out awards?

News of the day has to be Jeff Wells' "apology" to Peter Jackson for dissing King Kong. If he can overcome his biases about that film, it must be pretty damn good.

I'm hearing very positive word on King Kong. Like Oscar good. Maybe it's time to move it up the charts.

What else is out there that people are buzzing about in terms of Oscar? Brokeback? Capote? Not much so far.

All Wells said was the last hour or so of the movie was a real fun ride...that doesn't make it Oscar bound.

Seems like Dave and Roger Friedman have something in common. They both hate the NBR.

Huh. That's not what I've been reading. Over-indulgant, over-long and over-hyped are the three things I've seen.

But, I won't know for sure until tomorrow.

I don't care if it is Oscar good. Just hoping for entertaining good.

Um, Panda, people _are_ buzzing about Brokeback and Capote for Oscars, plus Munich and Walk the Line. Where have you been?

Over-indulgent is usually a bad thing, but Peter Jackson is one of a small number of directors whose indulgences are worth it.

If you read what i wrote I credited Capote and Brokeback as movies that are being touted as Oscar contenders. But not much else. Walk the Line more for acting. Munich but no one has seen it. What else is there? Brokeback which a lot of people don't care for. Capote which is too small a film and more of an acting showcase. Maybe Kong rises above and shoots into the top 5. Who knows?

Good Night and Good Luck, Constand Gardener, The New World I'd say are way ahead of Kong. I'm curious what the broad reaction to Geisha will be.

New World. Has no shot. Malick doesn't tell Academy type stories and the early reviews haven't been glowing.

Constant Gardener might be the best film so far but it's buzz has died an early death and doesn't seem to have any traction.

Panda, that might be what you were thinking, but that's not how it came out in type. The question marks implied you were dubious about those movies.
Did Malick change his filmmaking style since Thin Red Line got seven nominations?
I, for one, am happy that Constant Gardener is unlikely to get many nominations. I thought it was strenuously overrated.

I don't recall The Thin Red Line actually winning anything or anyone giving it a chance to. Especially when it was the second best WW2 movie that year.

Terry Malick doesn't make Academy winning films. They're too challenging. Award worthy maybe. But winners? Not going to happen.

Real story is lack of big time film. All those eggs are in the Munich basket. If that is not the #1 film then we got a free for all and a real interesting race.

Lol, Terance. How can Ledger or Bana win Breakthrough Actor from NBR? For the very same reason how Charlize Theron and Paul Giamatti won their Breakthrough awards in 2003.

Yes. That's the point. The NBR is behind the times. Everyone knows but them.

If you thought that Paul Giammatti broke thru in "Sideways" than you haven't watched movies.

My point exactly Kamikaze. How has Heath Ledger not "broken"? I'm middle aged and even I know who he is.

But I was merely saying that it wouldn't be shocking to see the NBR give their breakthrough actor award to Bana or Ledger.

Charlize Theron won Breakthrough even though she had a few big hits, some Woody Allen movies and a recognisable name. Paul Giamatti won for American Splendour even though he had quite a few films on his resume.

Hell, if they (the NBR) don't choose Ledger or Bana they would most likely choose Cillian Murphy or Terrance Howard. Murphy especially was around back in 2003 when he had 28 Days Later, Intermission, Cold Mountain and Girl With A Pearl Earring. Terrance Howard has been around for a while too. Hell, he's been around so long he's been able to change his name from Terrance Dashon Toward (wtf?).
