Birth Of A Notion

After reading a FilmJerk.com piece that suggested that the release of Bloodrayne was in trouble already (it launched today) and that its first-time-out distributor, Romar Entertainment might sink with it, I called up Romar to see what they had to say.

I spoke to Jim Schramm (Founder, CEO, and President of the company) about the situation with the 3-month-old company that offers to handle distribution, marketing, and publicity for indie filmmakers for just 20% or so of the rentals. Schramm, who has partnered on the company with actor Billy Zane and his distribution VP Rizza Magsayo, is an affable enough guy and was very positive about the future for both Bloodrayne and Romar.

Mr. Schramm acknowledged that the original release plan for a 2000 screen release was reduced to just 985 playdates this weekend when in recent days, some of the major chains reduced the number of screens they were willing to give the action thriller. As FilmJerk reported, many prints went to theaters that weren’t playing the film. But according to Schramm, this was because Romar struck 1600 prints and still hope to expand to 1600 screens in an expansion next weekend. In addition, they expect to take the film to Canada on 500 screens on February 3.

Schram says that Romar has spent $22 million in P&A on Bloodrayne, including four thousand 30-second TV spot buys and one thousand in-theater ad buys at AMC and Regal Theaters.

That said, Schramm and Magsayo did book this movie themselves. They are in the process of hiring an experienced booker in the immediate future. And given that Schramm says Romar has 15 more films awaiting distribution, they better hurry up.

In the meanwhile, with its 985 screens, Bloodrayne ranks #17 on Rentrak as of 2pm today.

What's Retrack?

You do know that this is a Uwe Boll movie, right? Yes, THAT Uwe Boll. It wasn't screened in advance for critics. I saw it this afternoon. (It's being shown, BTW, with a trailer for Boll's NEXT movie.) My review is supposed to be posted on Variety.com within the next couple hours.

While it may not have been screened for critics with traditional press screenings, Romar had no problem letting myself and other critics in to the premiere at the Chinese this past Wednesday.

Also, I have edited the story after speaking with Mr. Schramm, who is, as Dave Poland points out, very affable, to add both sides of the story.

BloodRayne film shipping is being handled by Technicolor Cinema Destribution, which handles about half the studios' film shipments. They know their shit. If prints are being sent to the wrong theater or to locations that haven't booked the film yet, it's clearly the fault of the distributor.

It's funny...I know a couple of former bookers who could book a film like this in their sleep. I'm sure they could have helped. I wonder why these folks haven't staffed up for their first release? Dumb.

Poland meant to say Rentrak, jeffmcm. It's a company that tabulates grosses for distributors, like EDI (owned by AC Nielsen)

Frankly, any company that puts all their eggs in an Uwe Boll basket deserves to go up in flames, no matter how nice they are. Sad, but true. My question is: Why are people like Ben Kingsley signing up for these movies?! Christian Slater and Tara Reid I can understand, but this is almost as bad as Jeremy Irons in Dungeons and Dragons!

Posted by: Joe Straat [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 04:51 PM

Bloodrayne's trailers/spots are the most amateur-looking I've seen on TV in a while.

$$$, $$$, and $$$

Estimated budget of Bloodrayne (from IMDb) $25,000,000

I don't think anyone's going to get big $$$ on that budget. But I suppose if Sir Ben got a cool million, it might be worth slumming it for a movie very few people are going to see unless they get paid to.

Posted by: Joe Straat [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 06:39 PM

Prestige actors like Ben Kingsley get a nice paycheck basically to allow their faces to appear in the commercials and their names on the box, and to do a couple of days of REALLY easy work on the set. It's called buying respectability. What do you think has put bread on Dennis Hopper's table for the last decade?

Bloodrayne in trouble? Say it ain't so!

Posted by: Sanchez [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:05 PM

Boll directed BBM right???? If he did the defenders would be defending at all costs.

Come hell or high water.

Posted by: PandaBear [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:11 PM

Is Uwe Boll still releasing his next movie in two volumes ala Kill Bill? Cause... that's a pisser. Is it possible to have NO ONE show up to a screening ANYWHERE for a film?

Posted by: KamikazeCamelV2.0 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:23 PM

Just like the dozens of horrible gay-themed movies that come out every year and how they get defended tooth and nail as part of A Movement? I remember the huge media storm when Kissing Jessica Stein came out. Covers of magazines. Or when Cronkite came out of retirement to interview the director of Tarnation. Or when Trick won all those Independent Spirit Awards.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:30 PM

That was to Panda, not Camel.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:32 PM

What gay themed movies come out every yr, Jeff? Name one?

Try to start an argumwent. Dare you.

Posted by: PandaBear [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:48 PM

My favorite quick story about BloodRayne is that my local $2 theatre got a print on Thursday amongst all those accidental shipments. So, um, is it really bad enough to where they're automatically booking it in second-run houses, lol!?

Posted by: Bodhizefa [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:53 PM

I don't understand the question. Dozens of gay-themed movies come out every year. Just this year: Mysterious Skin, Capote, Rent, Happy Endings...

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 6, 2006 11:56 PM

I'm not really sure that Capote counts as a "gay-themed" movie. Just because a character is gay doesn't make it a theme of the film. I don't think it was even a central issue is Capote, unless you knew the history of the man and in turn applied it to your personal theory of the movie.

Posted by: eoguy [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 12:42 AM

Yes, it's not a central theme of that movie.
But my point stands: several gay-themed movies that you may have heard of, dozens more that sink into obscurity or straight-to-DVD.

How does a post on Bloodrayne turn into a debate over BBM?

David, you probably need to consider renaming the Hotblog for the time being. How about The All BBM All The Time blog?

Like it or not, it seems the BBM haters are less likely to let go of the subject than are the BBM lovers.

Posted by: peteinportland [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 07:37 AM

Let's get this back on topic before it gets locked.

There are no ads for "Bloodrayne" in NYC and New Jersey newspapers. That tells you the movie is an el stinko and/or the company has serious money trouble.

Loews Cineplex isn't playing "Bloodrayne" -- at least not in New Jersey or NYC. IThe pic's only Manhattan booking is the AMC Empire.

Posted by: Chucky in Jersey [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 09:14 AM

All BBM. All the time. like a 24 Hour News Station.

Posted by: Bruce [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 10:33 AM

No ads in the Houston newspapers either. But I have seen TV spots for "BloodRayne." Anyone else out there actually see the movie yet? Anyone planning to? I don't want to say anything that might be construed as a spoiler.

Posted by: Joe Leydon [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 11:01 AM

JeffMCM, I'm not really sure what the argument is you're making, but I'd still like to point out that neither Capote nor Mysterious Skin should be eligible for any "horrible" film list. The others, yeah okay. I haven't seen those ones, but there's probably good reason.

Posted by: eoguy [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 11:03 AM

If you were staking your company on this movie, then you've already lost.

Posted by: Angelus21 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 11:14 AM

I went to wal-mart once typed in Bunuel's THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE and got Pauly Shore's BI0DOME. Now that's scandalous.

Posted by: Spacesheik [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 11:47 AM

I was just writing a response to Panda who seems to think that Brokeback is the only gay movie in years. I hereby drop the subject as obviously stupid and irrelevant.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 12:25 PM

CAPOTE not a gay movie? Good God, the man was practically drooling every time he even looked at Perry Smith.

And let's not forget THE PRODUCERS: "Keep it gay/Keep it gay/Keep it gay!"

Posted by: Cadavra [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 7, 2006 10:54 PM

For the first time in a LOOOONG time on this blog, I actually got two hearty laughs in the one thread! The comments made my Bodhizefer and Spacesheik really got my laughing. But it may be because it's 3:45am here and I think I'm delirious.

Anyway, to BloodRayne - the film made $450,000 on Friday from 900 screens or whatever. Isn't that hilarious! God, it scares me (but also fills me with giddy delight) to know that Uwe Boll has another 5 films in stages of production listed on IMDb. Excluding BloodRayne, his upcoming films star such people as:

Ray Liotta (yeah, RAY LIOTTA! As in the man from GoodFellas!)
Jason Strathom
Burt Reynolds (hey, if Uwe Boll is good enough for Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley why not a mere Academy Award nominee such as Burt?)
Ron Perlman
Leelee Sobieski (er, not surprising really)
Mathew Lillard (ditto)
Michael Pare

and one film called "Postal" has (wait for it, this is GOLD) GARY COLEMAN. But it gets even bettter. Gary Coleman is playing... HIMSELF!!!

I kid you not!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486640/

If that isn't comedy gold them I don't know what is. Also interesting. This "Postal" movie is the first movie of Uwe's films (excluding his earlier german efforts) that he has co-written. I love that he wrote a role for Gary Coleman to play himself. Brilliance doesn't come more obvious (or oblivious), no?

Posted by: KamikazeCamelV2.0 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 8, 2006 08:49 AM

I think the gayest movie of the year had to be King Kong. I mean, come on, little white men running after a huge hairy gorilla. Homoerotic.
