Children of Men.

The first fall movie I'll definitely see in theaters is, well, "Jackass 2." I saw the first one in a theater that serves beer - highly recommended. Not that "Jackass" is the fall movie I want to see MOST; it's just the one that comes first.

The fall movie I'm actually most exciting about is - it gets no less embarrassing - "Rocky Balboa."

Lunch With Dave: The Motion Picture

The Fountain.

Posted by: William Goss [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 9, 2006 11:40 PM

Are we calling Fall September-December or September-Thanksgiving? Right off the bat in September I'll see Crank and The Wicker Man, but the first movie that I'm really anticipating is The Black Dahlia.

I also notice that All the King's Men is getting an official dump date of Sept. 22, far from the high-profile dates later in the fall.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 9, 2006 11:40 PM

Hollywoodland looks to be this year's Auto Focus. I can only hope. I adore Coulter's direction on The Sopranos. I would love to see Affleck get a Best Supporting Actor nomination. That would be so sweet.

Am I the only one who thinks The Fountain could be Aronofsky's sophmore slump movie? It looks too ambitious for such an intimate filmmaker. I pray for the best, but fear the worse.

The three best trailers are Marie Anoinette, The Departed, and the new Nolan movie. The trailer for the new DePalma is also a knockout.

For me, the new Scorsese is the movie to beat this Fall.

Posted by: Jimmy the Gent [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 12:03 AM

You got that right, Jimmy. Watching The Departed trailer before WTC today... man... I felt like Anthony Michael Hall in Weird Science getting his first glimpe of Kelly LeBrock. Sheer motherlovin' perfection, baby. Scorsese with just one of these badass actors would have me enthralled. But Nicholson, Damon, DiCaprio AND Dirk Diggler together in a gangster flick. I had to pinch myself.

Nolan's The Prestige and Fincher's Zodiac are a very distant second.

Posted by: Crow T Robot [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 12:30 AM

There's quite a lot of movies I want to see soon. Marie-Antoinette, The Fountain, The Prestige, Hollywoodland, Children of Men.

"Hollywoodland looks to be this year's Auto Focus. I can only hope."

Why on earth would you want Hollywoodland to turn out like AutoFocus. Especially if you want to see it get awards recognition.

That trailer is bonkers. "It's my wife!" lol. It looks so direct-to-dvd. And really really really bad. Poor Robert Patrick.

Posted by: KamikazeCamelV2.0 [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 01:28 AM

That was an awesome trailer, Dave. Just, wow. Especially since that's the first thing I watched after finishing a screening Terminator 2, just going from action perfection to ultimate cheese is a nice segue. Man that looks so bad though when the title finally came up it got a huge laugh.

My first film I'm really looking forward to for the next two months is "U.S. Vs John Lennon". Kinda interested in Hollywoodland and Black Dahlia about equally.

then in the next two weeks we get 'The Science of sleep' 'Rennaissance' and 'Open Season' 'Children of Men' and I'm somewhat interested in School for Scoundrels (though I know every beat of the movie from watching what type of movie the trailer sells), Flyboys and Last King of Scotland, I've heard good things about the Painted Veil, but is it still going limited in late Sept or has it been bumped back to December?

October is an embarassment of riches with, "the departed', 'Man of the year' 'fast food nation,' 'flags of our fathers' 'the prestige' 'babel' and 'lucky you'

minor films of interest to me in october are 'running with scissors', 'infamous' 'little children' and 'flicka' (depends if I'm still hanging with that girl who's into horses, got out of Dreamer though...)

November big films for me are, "flushed away' 'borat' 'stranger than fiction' 'a good year,' 'fur' 'for your consideration' 'come early morning' 'the fountain'

December has 'the nativity story' 'Apocalypto' 'the good german' 'the holiday' 'unaccompanied minors' 'pursuit of happyness' 'rocky balboa, 'night at the museum' 'pan's labyrinth'

I do about 80% of theatre going in the fall, I've seen about 6 films in theatre so far this year, I'll hit at least 6 per month from september through December, and porbably quite a few more than that.

My most anticipated (the one's I will not miss and will see opening weekend) films are,
The Fountain
Pursuit of Happyness
The Nativity Story
U.S. Vs John Lennon
Apocalypto
Departed
Flags of our Fathers
Science of Sleep
Rocky Balboa
Good German
Flushed Away
Pan's Labyrinth

I'm guessing September is a fall month, so I'll go with Hollywoodland as the first fall film that I want to see. The first weekend of September looks like crap - sorry, Crank and The Wicker Man trailers just don't do it for me.
Other than that, School for Scoundrels looks fun.
October brings Running With Scissors for stuff that's just recently popped onto my radar.
Then there is the stuff I've been waiting for already:
The Prestige, The Fountain, Children of Men, The Departed, Babel, The Good German and Reign O'er Me (or Empty City - what's it called these days?) all come to mind at the moment.

Posted by: Aladdin Sane [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 04:18 AM

Ah, how could I forget 'My name a "BORAT"'. That movie looks great.

And I read somewhere Babel has been pushed back to November?

Posted by: Aladdin Sane [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 04:20 AM

My most anticipated: Babel, Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth. Three of my favorite directors, all Mexican, with their next movies. Figure I'll be able to see all of them by the end of September.

Posted by: EDouglas [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 04:39 AM

Finished The Prestige a couple of months ago, and, if the movie follows the book, it should be an enjoyable sf romp...especially as a Sixth Sense type of shock could be included. Also will be seeing as many films as possible at TIFF...so that's really what i'm looking forward to...

Posted by: Kambei [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 06:18 AM

Does IDLEWILD suck as much as a late August release date suggests?

Otherwise BATTLESTAR GALACTICA comes back in October...

Posted by: Boonwell [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 06:20 AM

There really does appear to be a lot of great looking stuff coming out way in the last 4 months. People like to complain, but I'm sure there will be at least a few titles that everybody can get excited about and barrack for throughout the awards season.

Black Dahlia

Posted by: Hobbette [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 07:47 AM

The Prestige and Casino Royale!

The Fountain, Happy Feet, Flags of our Fathers, Red Sun Black Sand, and Rocky Balboa are all Must Sees.

The Protector, The Departed, Crank, Jackass 2, Fearless, Stranger Than Fiction, Deja Vu, and The Blood Diamond will likely get play from me.

Eragon, Marie Antoinette, and Apocalypto are on the fence.

Black Dahlia, The Guardian, All The King's Men, Employee of the Month, Grudge 2, Santa Clause 3, and Tenacious D look horrid from start to finish.

Posted by: Tofu [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 08:52 AM

... And is the poster for "The Reaping" looking like a mixture of the Gothika & Sahara one-sheets... Or is it just me?

Posted by: Tofu [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 08:54 AM

Half Nelson: with Ryan Gosling in a great twist on the usual tired premise - inspirational teacher to inner-city kids by day, crack addict by night.

The Painted Veil: also great cast (Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber) but I have the same questions as Adam regarding release date.

The Illusionist: again, great cast (Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti) and the great Ricky Jay as technical consultant on the film. (If you've ever seen a Ricky Jay stage performance, you'll know what I'm talking about.) It arrives here later this month, but I consider it a "fall" film.

Volver: Pedro Almodovar. Need I say more?

Posted by: wolfgang [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 09:06 AM

Wow, Wolfgang - I hadn't heard that description of "Half Nelson." That pushes it to near the top of my list. Reminds me of a guy I know, who can somehow pull off a very successful legal career with being a cokehead almost every night of the week.

And I'm a 5th grade teacher who doubles as a Bud drinker in the p.m., so I can relate as well.

I thought for sure you were going to link to the teaser for Smokin' Aces. I think it definitely gives The Marine a run for it in the ADD department.

As far as Fall releases are concerned....

Tier 1 - El Aura (RIP Fabian Belinsky), Babel, Borat, Casino Royale, The Departed, Fast Food Nation, Feast (Gulager!), The Fountain, Idiocracy, The Last Kiss, Lucky You, The Prestige, Running with Scissors, School for Scoundrels), The Science of Sleep, Stranger Than Fiction, Tenacious D in 'The Pick of Destiny', This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Tideland, Volver

Tier 2 - All the King's Men, The Black Dahlia, Bobby, Children of Men, Deja Vu, Employee of the Month, For Your Consideration, A Good Year, Little Children, Man of the Year, Marie Antoinette, The Reaping, We Are Marshall, The Wicker Man

Tier 3 - Flyboys, The Guardian, Happy Feet, Hollywoodland, Killshot, Open Season, Stormbreaker

Tier Zed - Flags of Our Fathers

Has anyone heard what the definitive word is on Zodiac? is it really being dumped in January without showing at all in December for awards consideration? Is the word shit on it?

Posted by: johnhaub [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 09:37 AM

THE MARINE! Fuck Yeah!

This looks as dumb and fun as TEAM AMERICA, only unintentionally - or is it?

Posted by: Goulet [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 10:09 AM

Dude, count me in on Babel and The Fountain. Even though I was disappointed by 21 Grams, a movie made by the guy who did Amores Perros is definitely going to give me a cinematic hard-on in anticipation of its release. . .

Posted by: repeatfather [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 10:11 AM

I have questions about Zodiac too. Is there some power struggle going on between Fincher and the studios (Warner Bros/Paramount)?

Hey Josh, more info on Half Nelson -

My neighbor is early into a career as a grade school teacher. He's a cool guy and I'm sure he loves what he does, but the stress of the profession comes out every now and then.

Man, I just read my last post. Someone hand me a thesaurus so I can look up "great."

Posted by: wolfgang [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 10:13 AM

Boy... lots of disappointed people coming in the wake of actually seeing Hollywoodland....

Posted by: David Poland [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 10:31 AM

Superman is having a really bad slump year.

Posted by: palmtree [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 10:35 AM

I saw HALF NELSON at Sundance and it's really, really great. Ryan Gosling gives a good reminder that he can actually act and the movie doesn't pull many punches. It's tough to watch but still really good.

I'm seeing HOLLYWOODLAND Sunday and am stoked for it!

I'm excited for the Scorcese, The Prestige, Zodiac, Black Dahlia...

Posted by: PetalumaFilms [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 10:54 AM

But the unanswered MARINE question is: is the feature itself any less ADD than this trailer?

Posted by: Cadavra [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 11:01 AM

I'm sorry, but Hollywoodland looks terrible. I dunno.

There don't look to be that many good ones coming up, though I'm really waiting for some news on most of these.

In terms of crap movies that look craptacular, I'm putting my money on Crank. If done right, it could be better than Snakes on a Plane. But let's face it. I'm all SoaPed out.

October 20 is officially Christmas come early. The Prestige looks amazing, and I must see Marie Antoinette after the overwhelmingly divergent responses from Cannes. And another Linklater film is always something to look forward to.

Posted by: Danny Boy [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 11:08 AM

The Rob Schneider poster reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman, his mom and Chef are travelling all over on planes, and the coming previews are for dumb films: "You saw him turn into an animal, now Rob Schneider is the Stapler!" or "He was a stapler, but now he's a Carrot!"

Posted by: Aladdin Sane [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2006 02:13 PM

"And is the poster for "The Reaping" looking like a mixture of the Gothika & Sahara one-sheets... Or is it just me?"

It does! But it also has the worst tag line in history. It's three sentences long!

"Thousands of years ago there was a series of bizarre occurances that many believe to have been the Ten Biblical plagues.

No one thought they could happen again.

Until now."

ugh. They could cut that down my half at least and reduce it to one sentence.

"Boy... lots of disappointed people coming in the wake of actually seeing Hollywoodland...."

Damn, really? That's a shame. I was so stoked to see Diane Lane (in my mind she won the Oscar for Unfaithful) and Ben Affleck (who I like in serious work) in a drama that actually looked good.
