Long Legs... If You're Deep Roy

There is a sub-class of releases that open decently, but then have unusually weak legs. Someone brought one of these titles up in another entry’s comment and so I went looking.

Here are the 74 movies that have opened over $10 million and not made it to more than 2.5 times that opening gross.

It seems like the only useful statistic here is that almost all of these movies were released in the last few years. Some are good, most are bad.

I liked 3.5 of those movies. How unsurprising.

Nearly all of these are niche targets. They played to their core, and never broke out from there.

Wow! What a list! I admire your effort Mr. Poland. But if you are like me, then these things are fun. I simply like lists especially ones involving movies.

not to be a schmuck, but Starship Troopers opened to $22 million in November, 1997... in case you care. And yes, these lists are fun.

Of the movies listed, I actually liked a small sampling of them (17 or 22% of the list), and the comment about niches is correct. Some movies aren't designed to break out, so as long as they are budgeted accordingly (and that includes marketing budgets), more power to them.
