Sundance 2 - Expired

Just saw what might well be this Sundance’s You, Me & Everyone We Know. It’s called Expired and it is a romance of broken people who, in this case, happen to be meter “maids” (is that the word if one of them is Jason Patric?).

The film stars Samantha Morton in one of her most daring, near silent, performances. She has no past that we know of. She lives with her mother (a terrific, dramatic mute-because-of-illness performance by Teri Garr). And she is at a standstill, watching the lights of Christmas, working as a meter maid as an odd homage to her dead father, who loved cars.

Jason Patric is a meter maid prick of epic proportions. But he once had dreams.

Patric is always at his best playing the prick. And here, with more alternative context to work with than ever before, he gives probably his best performance to date. You never quite know what’s coming and you can feel the wake of where he was emotionally just seconds before.

In some ways, the film is reflective of the work of both lead actors, but it is, indeed something new.

It’s not for the slam-bam crowd, but the cineastes could well make this a champ of Sundance ’07.

If finding it hard to believe Patric could ever top his work in Rush, or After Dark My Sweet for that matter.

But this sounds interesting, especially for the return of Garr.

I have yet to see Jason Patric in a role that I didn't like. Even The Alamo, for Chrissakes! Okay, there was Speed 2, but I can't say I hated him so much as the experience as a whole. And as much as I love me some Samantha Morton, Teri Garr breaks my heart every time I see her onscreen. Can't wait.

So like MaYaEWK, it's overly precious, trite, and will be the darling of the Modern Art cinephile?

Didn't YMEWK bomb and get bad reviews?

And MCN could learn something from Drudge on headlines:

"Risky Blog On The League Giving A Catho-Lick To Hounddog"

There's undercover, and then there's who the fuck knows what this asshole is talking about.

I came in here to say I find it hard to believe Patric could ever top his work in "Your Friends and Neighbors," especially in the role of a prick.

Well, I saw it, and it's good, but not THAT good. Hard to believe in the context of this film that Samantha Morton could enjoy the company of Jason Patric.

YMEWK was pure McDog Shit. Real honest "I made this, pay attention me, I am special, don't you dare think otherwise" selfishness.
