The Ugly Awards
With few exceptions, the most unpleasant set of celebrity photos ever to appear in the New York Times.
Really.
I usually love the photos in the Times, but... how did the personal publicists let Penelope Cruz look like she has an acne problem? How did Peter O’Toole end up in a shroud of darkness? Could Helen Mirren look older? Is Brad Pitt in drag?

Most of them are in dire need of airbrushing (if you're into that kind of thing). But they are interesting in a vaguely arty kind of way. I agree that overall they're not a great set of pictures. But then again, I don't go to the times for great pictures.

One looks like they could land a lunar orbiter on Murphy. Is Mirren trying out for a new Cruella De Vil role? Cate Blanchett is crying for carbohydrates. Forest Whitaker is about to cut your ass... Bitch. Christian Bale is moving closer and closer to becoming James Caviezel. Rinko Kikuchi is as wannabe slutty as ever. Vin Diesel belongs like a robber baron. Jennifer Hudson's "Yes, all fashion can be made into curtains" pic had me cracking up. Sacha Baron Cohen IS Sandman! Richard Burbridge should have did something different with either Leo & Brad, but whatever.
Oh boy... I feel like I'm on Superficial.com!

"Is Brad Pitt in drag?" WTF?

Thanks for the link to the great photographs, Dave! Filled with character and elegance and each one unique. Loved them all.
of course, outside of Kikuchi and Baquero they're not glamour shots, but they're damned fine photos and I liked them all. Much better than plaster-grin headshot crap you typically get, that's a fantastic portrait of Penelope Cruz, much more content than a usual ragpic.

I like the Sacha one.

i like pictures where people aren't doctored. I would much prefer the end to all the embeds, brushing etc and then the world would realize that most Hollywood stars only look marginally to somewhat better than average.

I liked most of them, because they are not typically star shots...the O'Toole one could have used better lighting, but perhaps that's the point - he's in the twilight of a long and brilliant career.
The SBC photo is cool, and the Abbie Cornish one got my attention. Don't think I've ever seen her before.

Aladdin...
Proceed directly to video store. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
Rent SOMERSAULT. Fall in love with Abbie Cornish. I defy you to do otherwise.
Girl's a major talent just getting started, and stunning to boot.

I'm not in love with Candy, her film with Heath Ledger, but man, she is an eyeful. Amd I do think she can act... it was just kinda wasted in that film... though I expect there will be a big teen following when it hits DVD.. much better for the TV screen

Penelope Cruz's face looks like it was used to mop up a whorehouse toilet.
DiCaprio's shot is kind of fascinating in the way the iris on the right glares back at you.

I like the black and white ones generally (especially Cheung, Cohen and Dench), but most of the colour ones are just so... blah. Like, they don't look like parts of a photography session, but merely random shots that were taken. Like the O'Toole and Whitaker ones.
I actually sorta like the Cruz one. It feels motherly, earthy. Almost as if she didn't know it was being taken.
Drew, glad to hear you liked Somersault. That was a film from the infamous 2004 for Australian film. Probably the single worst year ever. That was the best one by far. Cornish was destined to be a star. She was great too in Candy even if, as Dave says, it's not the best of films.
She looked like Keri Russell in that photo though.

The one of Dame Dench is stunning. Abbie Cornish ... wow. Could have done something more interesting with Cate. Mirren.... well, Tofu already pointed out the Cruella De Vil resemblance. Miss Hudson's photo is unforgivable. Could the photography be anymore bland?

Yeah, Hudson, Whitaker, O'Toole... there's a whole bunch there that I could've taken with a crappy $2 camera from the supermarket. It was if they weren't even trying.

I agree, Dave. Those are almost uniformly awful. Neither competently formal nor informatively casual. Your sense of taste is working.

Murphy looks like a shady lawyer as played by Snoop Dogg, Dano appears to be a pre-teen and Pitt and Leo have the same '90s "Friends" hairdo.
I don't see where Brad looks particularly feminine, though he does looks like Benicio del Toro. Never noticed it before, but they have similar narrowed eyes.
As for Whitaker, did anyone else catch him on SNL? Two things I never knew about him: he can sing, and he's funny as hell. He was in a singing-waiter sketch, a typical one-joke-stretched-out-for-ten-minutes SNL affair, and somehow kept me giggling through the entire thing. He has great timing and body language, and should definitely do more comedy.

They're pretty horrible, except Leo. Le Sigh.

Vanity Fair has Penelope looking all waxed, airbrushed, and glossy in its latest issue. Should be on the stands this week, if it interests you Dave.
FWIW - Since HD and Blue Ray are the next competing formats in DVD, and with television converting to HD, we'd better get used to seeing "Hollywood Glamour" looking like the rest of us in the meantime.

Oh yes, the Singing Waiter sketch could have bombed like no other if not for Whitaker's excellent singing voice. Man has a reserve of oxygen known only to astronauts.
