Pops

John Goodman really is the obvious choice for Pops. Is the kid from Bad Santa too old to play Sprytle?

Personally, I always thought the missing mother was part of the power of the cartoon. Maybe The Wachowskis will kill Ms. Sarandon off before the second act. Maybe that'll be why Speed's older brother dissapears and becomes Racer X.

Here's a little scoop. Expect to hear that the Canadian Bollywood beauty who was the lead in the Oscar-nominated Water, Lisa Ray (whose birthday is today), to be announced to play Trixie shortly.

John Goodman is so awesome.

Um, it's Speed Racer. Is anyone taking this movie seriously at all?

Posted by: Me [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 4, 2007 06:54 AM

Yeah,

The Wachowshi's will obviously deliver a visually stunning movie, but who cares about Speed Racer beyond the hard-core anime crowd. I can't believe this has any real name brand recognition.

Perhaps thats the point.

John Goodman looks nothing like Willie Stargell. Bad casting.

Oh, this is about Speed Racer? Who the fuck could possibly care???

Posted by: Wrecktum [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 4, 2007 08:08 AM

If it hadn't been for 'Me' providing context I would have had no idea what anybody was talking about here.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 4, 2007 08:21 AM

I think Speed Racer RULES....but it's tough to see him on TV and I refuse to join the anime fanhood.

I can't believe Goodman is still alive. Seriously, not being a dick. He looks terrible, is grossly overweight, smokes and from what I ehar is working a sweet little drug addiction. He's poised to overtake Keith Richards in the "I can't believe he's still alive" contest. Dick Cheney is still in 3rd, but he's powered by satan.

Sigh - it's "Spritle" not "Spryitle." As in:

"Spritle's my name and mischief's my game!"

Well I care and the casting and entire package f*cking sucks. I know I'm in the mionority but it they are going to throw money at it, it should be done right or postponed.

They should have let Takeshi Kitano or Johnny To (who'd be perfect) or someone with some better action chops do it if it was going to be live characters. V for Vendetta and the first Matrix aren't an appropriate enough resume for me.

John Goodman doesn;t fit Pops. I rather see Tommy Lee Jones or some other cantankerous blue collar Michael CHiklis type do it whose not so fat he can't slide under a car and work on it.

Grrrrrr.

Racer X disappeared because he had a fight with Pops over race-car driving...

Speed Racer is fun for the anime crowd as an "oldie" http://www.speedracer.com/
I love it almost as much as Godzilla. It always was on cable when I was growing up.

I remember watching "Speed Racer" as a kid way back in the very early 1980s, not on cable as Lota did, but on a local UHF station. I don't think I've seen it since then, and I'm not all that interested in the movie.

I imagine the Wachowskis were chosen in the hopes that they'll be able to mimic the success of the Matrix films. I have my doubts, as their previous attempt to adapt source material of limited appeal wasn't a smashing success.

Phew, I thought I was gonna be alone in the "who-cares-about-speed-racer?" column.

Yeah...great company you're in Aladdin...

I could do worse.

Why is "The Reaping" opening on a Thursday?

Posted by: Blackcloud [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 4, 2007 09:56 PM

Is there a movie the Wachowskis were involved in that Poland hasn't loved and devoted numerous columns to?

I guarantee Speed Racer makes his top ten the year it comes out.

Posted by: PastePotPete [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2007 01:26 AM

Because they didn't want it opening on Good Friday or, um...Last Supper's Eve Wednesday.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2007 02:13 AM

Paste Pot Pete: absolutely.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2007 02:14 AM

Were the Wachowskis "chosen for" this project? I thought they actively chose to make this their next feature.

and i thought the reaping came out today to get a jump on Grindhouse and Are We Done Yet?, the country's number 2 and 1 movies for this upcoming weekend, respectively.

Posted by: 555 [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2007 05:42 AM

I figured it was so it wouldn't open on Good Friday, but opening it on Maundy Thursday doesn't seem like a great alternative.

Posted by: Blackcloud [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2007 07:02 AM

Is Poland getting out of the Internet business? His content has been for shit recently. Perhaps it's an extended vacation.....

Posted by: Wrecktum [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 5, 2007 10:57 AM

It's out on Thursday because Friday is a public holiday so there's bound to be busier cinemas on Thursday night when people are free. Or... that's what I assumed.

Posted by: KamikazeCamelV2.0 [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 6, 2007 05:25 AM

It's not a national holiday in this country, KCamel.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 6, 2007 08:41 AM

It's... not?

That's bonkers.

Posted by: KamikazeCamelV2.0 [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 7, 2007 08:31 AM

Well, the markets were closed and lots of business were, but no, Good Friday is not a national U.S. holiday. Why should it be?

Posted by: Wrecktum [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 7, 2007 10:29 AM

hey Camel...Christianity isn;t a state religion, and not everybody is a practicing Christian over here, yo, so it isn;t a bank holiday here. Passover was this past week too, so with the scarcity of folk in work it was a good week to take a day or two off, religious or not.

Posted by: Lota [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 7, 2007 10:39 AM

All of that said, why is Christmas a state holiday but not Easter?

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 7, 2007 11:21 AM

Banks don;t like holidays that "move" and Easter does move since it is not at the same time every year, so maybe xmas/New Years are observed holidays since they are secularly popular, and don;t move/change date. Originally I am sure they had religious significance, but there are 8-12 bank holidays every year in developed nations and former colonies of developed nations.

Christmas is often a two day Bank holiday to celebrate Boxing Day (depends on the bank).

Also, the USA is about the only developed nation that doesn;t have an early May bank holiday to mark May Day (International Labour Day), but like many other countries, we have a late May bank holiday (Memorial day).
