Once More Into The Ocean's

This movie is about nothing. It makes Seinfeld’s nothing look deep. But by finally agreeing with itself that Pitt and Clooney are Sinatra and Dino and that Damon is The Lawford (and yes, in this film, Cheadle really does become The Sammy for the first time in the series), the film franchise finally gets out of its own way and has the loose-minded fun that was always intended. Create an earthquake? Sure. An easy answer to “the impossible heist?” Sure, if it’s fun. Bad fake noses… silly pheromone jokes… international labor politics with a purely comedic kick… cougars… diarrhea jokes… absurd manipulations… improbable hidden cam scams… and plenty of stuff that just makes no sense (Why exactly is B- Mac needed on the casino floor?)… yes… but so what? It’s Pirates of the Careless Being. It’s a summer movie, damn it!

The Rest...

Forget "challenges"... are there any surprises in this one worth my time? Or it it pretty much a reworking of the first one?

It's just a lightweight thing... can't really say there was a single significant surprise... more fun than the first for me though

Ocean's 13 is opening Cinevegas film festival! This is "Dangerous"???

It's kind of the opposite of the first film. For me, "Ocean's 11" doesn't have a wasted beat - everything is part of the same arrow aimed right at the end, a perfect piece of glittery Hollywood product. I find it as rewatchable a "Die Hard."

"Ocean's 13" throws away the script and just says, "Yeah, you know they're going to win, so here's a bunch of schtick to entertain you on the way to the credits." There are very few real complications (unless you include the bit where Cheadle "distracts" Pacino), I'm still not really sure what the heist was or accomplished (***SPOILERS*** you're telling me every last one of those people managed to cash out before being escorted out? ***END SPOILERS***), and I barely remember it the next day beyond Reiner's schtick, the Casey Affleck side plot, the fact that Cheadle was also probably shot out pretty quickly and that one scene with Pitt/Clooney in front of the Bellagio talking about "the old Vegas."

Nice to see Pacino fairly restrained, though. One good director and all that noisy noise from "88 Minutes," "Two for the Money," "Gigli," "Simone," and "The Recruit" kind of fades and reminds you that the guy can kind of effortlessly bring it when he wants.

That sounds like a better movie to me - more honest, for one thing.

I have the same opinion about that film. I'm happy to hear that the latest Ocean is fun to watch. I'll be watching it tomorrow!!

"...though I couldn’t argue with anyone who claimed that the film became an overly self-indulgent, confusing mess."

YES! At least he'll acknowledge the fact that an Ocean's 12 debate pretty much goes nowhere.

I'm looking forward to the third one though.

As with most people, I really enjoyed the first, hated the second (the Ocean' movies aren't arthouse, Steven!) but the third one looks sort of in the middle. Not as good as the first because we have seen it all before, but better than the second because... well, it ain't hard to be better than the second.

No, they aren't arthouse...who has claimed otherwise? They're high fluff.

I'm too "in Vegas" to comment in depth, but I just saw OCEANS 13 and it's really, really fun. After reading DP's brief review (I'll read it all the way tomorrow) and reading his comment, I think he's right. It's just a great big silly, fun, funny movie. I liked the undercurrent about greed and money (there's a part about Mexican workers that doesn't *FIT* but will be good for American box office padders to see) but it's really the throwback "modern day rat pack" movie the other two flirted with.

Good stuff. I have to try to sleep now...Vegas don't play fair...

So another sequel of a remake of a movie that Sinatra is alleged to have said: "You want another take? Print it twice."

well this is good news. I like to look at George, so I would like to look at him in decent movie.

Roger is in fine, humourous form in his review of O13...I laughed.

That Sinatra quip is hilarious. The original was on AMC the other night...fun stuff, but the remake was a ton better. Love 11, really enjoyed 12 except for the "I'm Julia Roberts" gag which I felt was solopsistic and lame, and can't wait to see 13.

The Oceans films are just mindless fun for adults, just like Spiderman is for kids. Good clean summmer fun. Can't wait.

Anyone else think that American Gangster looks like it could be a good, mid-brow entertainment? Crowe looks to be in fine form. I especially curious to see Cuba Gooding, Jr. in a name movie. It's a well-cut trailer. It made think of Medillin. As much I like Ridley Scott, I do wish Oliver Stone had been allowed to do his wild man approach to the material. It could've been a great companion piece to Scarface, commenting on that film's influence on Black America.

Ocean's 12 was so loose, I couldn't help but indulge. I suppose the first was just too cold and to the point for my tastes.

Thirteen might please both groups, while alienating an entirely new one. Hurrah!
