holy crap. you're totally in my neck of the woods. the funeral i went to last week was a mile from the giant sombrero in the town that surrounds it, Dillon.

Dillon is featured in a documentary called "Corrdior of Shame" about having the worst schools in the country. It's the most depressing town i've ever been to. Please tell me you stayed on the highway

I wonder, with the recent explosion of Mexican immigrantion to South Carolina , if Pedro and his "frans" will become an embarrassment to South of the Border and the community.

Oh, trust me... South of the Border and it's Pedro have been an embarrassment to everyone for many many years. It's so kitschy it's an institution... and I bet everyone who's been driving the I-95 corridor regularly, has stopped there at least once to sneer.

May it never become "pc" or corporate. We need some tackiness now and then.

We did stop, compelled by all the signs... and it was creepy... like a Fox Atomic film...

The amusement park wasn't operating... the gas station was beaten up and we had to change pumps twice to get a pump with a working credit card slot... the bathrooms were in a different building altogether, a weird drugstore with a lot of porno and women's products... the employees were all hollow eyed and looked lost... and everyone working was black, which was reasonable for the area and pay grade, but oddly like cross-minority slavery given the Hispanic theme... and they wanted cash at all the shops, though maybe the big fireworks place was open to plastic.

I was waiting for someone to start shooting at the car or expose themselves to a little girl at the ice cream shop (which was a weird empty space except for the freezer and cash register).

That doesn't sound like kitschy fun. It sounds like a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

South of the Border really is a nightmare of a place. I have to pass it every time i head home to Florida from Wilmington, and my wife's family is from the town that it resides in (in the shadow of the giant sombrero as i say). I go there probably 4-5 times a year with her, and every time we do we stop at South of the Border to get gas or a drink before we drive the barren 2 hours back east to get home.

It really is a frightening little place. I keep thinking it's the great setting for a horror film. Imagine the carnival of souls like environment you could set up with the insane fiberglass characters and the amusement park which never seems to function.

I live in Florida too, but haven't stopped at SotB for a couple years now. It used to pull in the buses and tourists like crazy, but it sounds like it's jumped the shark.

Good idea about the movie, anghus, but I wonder, hasn't one already been made there? It seems as though it should, but I can't think of one. anyone?

It has been too long since there was a good haunted amusement park movie. Today it's all about the zombie strippers.

haven't seen a movie about zombie strippers. i did recently see a movie about bank robbers and zombies.

hatchling, there was a scene shot there for Forces of Nature (which some might qualify as a horror film). My friend Erica Dunton directed a movie called Find Love that has a key scene shot there. It's so garish, but it plays great on film.

Anghus, I bet you saw The Chilling. The bank robbery scene itself is delightful, the rest of the movie not so much.
