Lunch With... James McAvoy

James McAvoy sat down to talk about Atonement the day before his Golden Globe nomination. We discuss his work on stage and scree, the joy of working blue screen, the stylistic choices in the film, and the power and danger of both the "C" and the "N' words.

Okay, we all know that actors always put up some sort of veneer when doing interviews (Lord knows, they need to). But what impresses about McAvoy is that he comes across as a quite sincere and reflective person. And he is not the psychotically driven personality that hungers for adulation. It is for that reason that I think he will have a longer career. His answers are discursive as opposed to headline making or sound-bite orientated. In that way, he reminds me for Michael Sheen.

When I saw ATONEMENT, McAvoy was there for a Q&A and I agree Pope, he seems like a terrific guy. Made it a teeeeny bit harder for me to hate ATONEMENT. Then after a moment of reflection, it didn't.
