A Quick Look At TV

There are 55 hours of network television this upcoming week between the Big 4 Networks. 22.5 are reality/sports. 34.5 are pre-written programming. According to the schedule I am looking at, about 80% of the programming is new with 16.5 hours (again, according to this chart, which notes repeats) of hit shows still rolling out the last of their new episodes, the 22.5 hours of reality, and 5.5 hours of new series television.

The one network where the filmed programming is dominant is CBS, where there are only 3 hours of reality programming and 12 hours of filmed.

ABC is interesting, in that 4.5 of their 9 hours of filmed programming are shows that have basically failed on the network, but are now being give air time because there are new shows to air.

Next week, NBC has 7 hours of reality and 8 hours of filmed programming, including 3 hours of Law & Order and 4 hours of reality content that is launching this week or launched last week.

At Fox, the week before American Idol starts is also the BCS Championship week, pushing the reality/sports programming hours over the filmed, by 6.5 to 5.5 (the BCS game actually expands the net’s primetime schedule past it’s normal 10 hours of weekday programming). But it actually gets worse on American Idol week, as the weekday schedule goes to 6 hours of reality and just 4 hours of filmed programming.

FOX gets all sorts of reality heavy this time of year anyway. So it's no surprise that IDOL brings REALITY back to FOX. Of course this all leads to the WRITERS STRIKING becoming an even greater presence in people's lives. By the time we get to the Spring and there is hardly anything to watch on TV, more people will be pissed, and this strike will have to come to an end. Hopefully. You never know with these Hollywood types. They are a shifty lot.

Of course, once the NFL playoffs are over, then you'll really notice the hole in Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and maybe Monday nights.

Actually, those "new" episodes of Law and Order: Criminal Intent will have already played on USA Network. NBC also plans to "repurpose" episodes of "Monk" and "Psych" on Sundays after they've been shown on USA. I think it will be interesting to see how successful this experiment is. Many of us forget that not everyone in America has cable or satellite. Granted, we're talking about maybe only 25 percent of the population. But, hey, add to that 25 percent the people who aren't regular USA Network viewers, and you have the potential to grab a lot of folks who don't want to watch reruns or reality on ABC, CBS, Fox and CW as the WGA strike continues. As I've said before: if you haven't seen it yet, it's not a rerun for you. So who knows? Maybe NBC will start dredging up other USA and SciFi Channel shows. Maybe Peacemakers is in for a revival?

You go for Peacemarkers. When you could have been freakin relevant Joe and used THE DEAD ZONE or THE 4400. Freakin USA.

I hope that CBS will repurpose edited Showtime shows. With a DVR, I decided to ditch HBO and Showtime, but I would kinda like to see an edited Dexter...hey wouldn't that play to the CSI:Miami crowd....also, has anyone seen Fox's Terminator show...I am sure that the opening episodes will do big numbers, but is it any good???

bennett -- the 'terminator' pilot was pretty good but seemed to have a budget they could never maintain on a weekly basis....i was surprised, then, that the second ep held up as well as it does (although it's a little hard to judge since my copy has several temp fx shots)....the show also takes itself very seriously...hopefully, it'll lighten up a tad over time....
