Caught the last half hour of Miami Vice again this morning on one of the HBOs.
Sorry, but you'll never be able to convince me that this is something other than a first-rate piece of work. I will follow Michael Mann into hell (please save the "you already did" jokes re: Vice). Can't freaking wait for Public Enemies.

Three words that prove Miami Vice is not first-rate:
Colin Farrell's hair.

Miami Vice's visual brilliance transcends Colin Farrell's hair.
The draft they're moving ahead with for Public Enemies was written a day before the strike went into effect. It is not rushed or clipped; so awesome in so many ways. Plus Spinotti's supposed to shoot it. Fucking fantastic.

Couldn't hear a thing in that movie.

The opening shot of the Directors Cut of Miami Vice is brilliant, amazing, one of the best opening shots in a movie -- the works, baby. Why didn't Mann keep it in the theatrical release?
Public Enemies is going to be great. Looking forward to Spinotti's shots of the Mid-West landscape. Anyone else excited to see Depp finally playing a character that isn't, uh, quirky?
BTW, Domenick Lombardozzi for Baby Face Nelson.

Miami Vice has grown on me over the last couple of years. It still does not hold a candle to the freakin. Nor does it make a lick of sense. Yet it holds up for whatever the hell it is, and that has to count for something?

I love Miami Vice, it's grown on me as well through continued showings on HBO and Cinemax.

Anyone else been watching BREAKING BAD on AMC? Man, they had me on the fence towards being roped in until the last five mins of episode 2 (I had it Tivo'd). I think the show's pretty damn good.

And here I was looking forward to a nice brisk one hour Oscar telecast.

A deal has been reached to end the Hollywood writers' strike, according to a U.S. media report.
"It's over," former Walt Disney chief executive Michael Eisner told CNBC. "They made the deal, they shook hands on the deal. "
The major media companies and the Writers Guild of America reached an agreement last Friday, Eisner said live on CNBC's Fast Money.

so the strike is over, a deal has been made and announced and the writers don't even know what deal they've agreed to?....smells kinda stinky to me......

Why? That's how it always works. The negotiating committee makes a deal that they feel comfortable in presenting to their members, who then have a chance to review it and ratify it.

mcmahon-- my point is that the announcements are going out before any members have ratified anything.... the decision has been made without the vote.....

Mr Gittes, what was the opening shot? The opening scene of that movie was fantastic as it was.

Has anybody heard about the passing of John Alvin? If you don't know who he is click my name or head over to IMP.

Scooter, I know. And that's the way it typically works. The assumption is that the negotiating committee agreed to a contract that they believe the membership will agree to. Otherwise they're not really doing their job and wasting everybody's time.

I'd pay $25 a ticket for a Micheal Mann film.
You hear that exhibitors? Do your worst!

Gong Li is easily the best thing about Miami Vice.

KamikazeCamelV2.0: Opening shot has the camera underwater -- flirting with the surface -- until finally the surface is torn by a huge catamaran( go-fast boat or whatever).
The theatrical release had us suddenly in a night club. Kinda lame compared to the original.

Cadavra:
that's hysterical. thanks for the laugh.
as to the strike questions, the negotiating committee agrees in principle to a deal. then the lawyers put it in contract form. there's haggling done to make sure the written form fits the verbal agreement. in theory, the AMPTP is going to present a written agreement to WGA today. That agreement will be circulated amongst the membership so that they can discuss it at tomorrow's meetings in NY & LA. on sunday, if the board feels the contract will pass muster, it has the constitutional ability to end the strike. of course, if contract doesn't pass, they have to go back on strike.
