A Really Good Guy Goes
I have had my moments with the Los Angeles Times, but from the earliest years on this beat, at least one guy has always be cordial, thoughtful, and open to ideas beyond the politics of the office... Bob Welkos.
Today, the paper announced that he would be one of those exiting.
I have not been focused on Bob's big wins, like the Scientology series. But on the movie beat, whether at a premiere or in a submarine, he has always seemed pleasantly amused by the beat, knowledgeable, but a little disconnected. But what saner response to this beat could there be?
He seemed like a pro. A veteran who wasn't threatened... wasn't in need of drama... and who did the work to which he was assigned. There were few entertainment stories by Bob in memory that screamed for Defamer headlines. But there were fewer cases of people feeling they had been screwed over by the man or his fact work... and that's no small thing these days.
Anyway… the others are surely good folks too… but I am always pleased to see Bob’s face at an event. And I will miss it in the years to come.
