THB - The End of An Era: Episode One – The Critics

David Ansen joins the parade of film critics heading out the Traditional Media door at 62. He will, as Time’s Corliss and Schickel, remain in the game. But unlike some outlets, Newsweek will surely establish a new critic, likely from their familiar gene pool. I’d be shocked if the answer they come up with is not someone like Dave Karger from EW, Rebecca Keegan from Time, their own Ramin Setoodeh or some other young, New York media savvy, non-critic who has been around the industry for years.

The whole series of anti-criticism events demands a look at the bigger picture. I was asked last week about whether I thought all of these firings (with plenty more to come) really hurt independent film. And the answer is more complex than I would like it to be. Let me start with the punch line and then go back to the detail work…

The rest...

Fascinating, but as someone who reads print and web critics on-line for free I never see these ads of which you speak. I've taken your lede to ask David Carr a question. Keep you posted.

This just in...

ROEPER OWNS YOUR ASS.

BEST CRITIC IN AMERICA.

Say what you will about his supposed lack of "serious critical background" or whatever the stock bullshit complaint is, but his taste-- to the extent that such things aren't 99% subjective anyway-- is spot-on so much of the time, he's fun to watch, he's charismatic, and he's COOL. Most critics are not COOL.

Sorry to all the haterz that Roeper seems like a guy who's actually taxed some hot chicks in his day; I guess all critics should be boring, tweedy, goateed, low-testosteroned bores who'd be more at home reviewing books.

While we're at it, LexG for an LA TIMES reviewer position. Come on, they're just running AP reviews or Roger Moore for half the shit that SIR TURAN wouldn't lower himself to watch. I'd fucking OWN that Calendar, subscriptions would be THROUGH THE ROOF.

LEXG BITCH... MAKING READING FUN AGAIN.

I don't think it's a straight-up dichotomy between those who care about reviews and know who the good ones are versus those who don't care at all. I think there's a substantial crowd, that gets impressed when a movie has ten or so gushing quotes on it, and thus assume that "all" the critics like it, having no clue who Earl Dittman, Shawn Edwards, or Paul Fischer are.

I'm also curious why Rolling Stone sees the value in having a quote whore critic and Maxim doesn't.

I suspect most film critics will end up being those who do it for a hobby, or as a supplement to something else. Already, most film critics I know do something else as well, usually serving as film editor or arts editor. Freelance money for criticism tends to be scarce, so one only does that for the love of it, really -- can't live on it.

To an extent, this will mean that the critics left are those who really care. But it will also mean that movies they don't personally have an interest in may not get reviewed.

David Carr's answering everybody but me. I either asked him something really stupid or really hard and he's checking around for answers.

I wonder if ROEPER would friend me on MySpace.

He'd probably think I was awesome.

Lex, I think you need to read Vonnegut's Mother Night a few times.

And yeah, given Roeper's crappy taste, I think you're right.

Heard you the first time.

I know. It can't be said enough.

Roeper's like the cool, awesome buddy you want to see a ballgame with and have a few beers, then he'd totally leave you in the dust to go hook up with some hot chick.

ROEPER OWNS.
