Like A Rock, Well...

The original Norman Rockwell after the jump... this is what the history of the original piece was...
In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech about the "Four Freedoms" everyone should have: freedom from fear, freedom from want, freedom of speech, and freedom of worship. Norman Rockwell painted these Four Freedoms.
These paintings succeeded in raising almost $133 million in war-bond purchases. Norman Rockwell said the Four Freedoms were "serious paintings which sucked the energy right out of me, leaving me dazed and thoroughly weary."
Rockwell uses various techniques to draw your attention to the main character in Freedom of Speech. The speaker is in the center of the scene and he is the only one standing. Other people in the picture are looking up at him. Rockwell creates a strong sense that the speaker is really speaking and that the listeners are really listening. To illustrate listening, he slightly exaggerated the size of their ears.

Everyone who has accepted favors from convicted criminal Tony Rezko, please stand....

That looks like a scene out of some North Country styled civil rights movie.

Kid: do you mean like these people?
Again, the brother made a mistake, but he was not the only Democrat making a mistake. If Rezko is your basis to hate Obama. It's as faulty as Ocho Cinco's trade talk.

Dave: With all due respect, every time you post something like this, you're going to find out just how many hateful motherfuckers you have reading your blog. Myabe you can deal with that. Or maybe it will just depress you. But, either way, welcome to the new media.

Hey kid, as conservative columnist John Kass says, Rezko is also the GOP's problem.

He'll be a fine President, but he is not the Messiah. Tread carefully, my American friends and neighbors.

He'll be considered the messiah until in 20 years he tries to block the efforts a new up and coming messiah who will save America from the evil that is itself.
And then the whole process will start all over again.
Wash, rinse, repeat.

As long as each new messiah beats the old one, that's progress.

Nicol: again... the Western world ask you and people who share your political beliefs; "WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?" I am at loss. A complete and total loss.

Congratulations Dave,
You have now provided the first image I have ever seen that make me now NOT want to vote for him.
I mean, I still will, but God this picture...
It's like looking at an Americana Messiah complex and it just hits my cynicism trigger.
Like Leydon said, proceed with caution.

Actually, I agree with THX. It's way too Reagany for my liking.

God, I didn't even read the rest of the thread before I typed Messiah too.
Sorry for being impulsive and redundant.
And Nicol, I'm not going to get into it, but I had forwarded your past comments here about the BC-10 bill to my Vancouver and Toronto friends from film school who are now successful producers back in those respective cities...
Not to mention my girlfriend who is a model from Montreal (the model part was for Lex)
Seeing the fact you couldn't discern the censorship that bill would impose, combined with your political and religious views they concluded that you are simply bat-shit crazy and need to take your meds, take advantage of that free health care system.
Oh, and you're a MAJOR embarrassment to Canadians
I don't know about that, but I bet you're a bad tipper when you come to the States?
And congratulations on being a parent, but I worry about the programming you're going to fill that kid's head with, with all that hate you're carrying.
Another good example of why there should be tax breaks or some kind of compensation for those who take parenting classes and regularly have mental health emotional intelligence tests and checkups before pro-creating.
You're awesome and lucid when you talk film, get into politics or religion or spirituality and the CRRAAAZZZYYY comes through.
I wonder where all your American hate comes from? Passed down by a parent? Maybe you had a traumatic experience here?
I wonder when JeffMCM is going to catch that you're Unabomber crazy and not engage.
Note to Jeff and everyone else dating an LA actress:
You can't win with crazy.
Seriously. Just when they sound lucid and normal and you think you've gotten through, they go left on you and hello? Crazy!
Jeff, you will never win with Crazy. And everytime you engage with Nicol, it just reminds me of Narcicus and his reflection.
Meaning the inability to see the trap you're in..
Engaging someone whose crazy with logic and reason is an unobtainable useless effort. And any effort to get through and get them to concede or change is useless.
That being said, I believe anyone can be healed of any mental illness.
It's okay to hate America Nicol, everybody else in the world does.
It's when you want to impose Christian censorship with your support of the BC-10 that I'm going to scrap with you and call you out as a crazy loon who needs to shut up and take his meds and get some therapy. If not for you, for your kid.
God, I love the no banning rule here...

Sorry for that to everyone else...
But Nicol's comment just hit a trigger on those stored sentiments that I had been with holding and next thing I knew, I'm typing and venting and hitting post.
I shouldn't talk shit about Emotional Intelligence after than kind of outburst.
And Nicol, I recognize you as another expression of God and we all put our pats on one leg at a time, etc.
But believe it or not, we all operate on vibrations and like attracts like, and I got hooked into your hate vibe with that comment (and many of your others) and I fell for it, and threw some of my own.
So I already apologize for my part, though I stand by some of the things I said about emotional and mental responsibility as a parent.
I shall be more careful next time, but I wonder how much better your life would be if you weren't always so hateful?
(and maybe you're not, and you just save it for here)
Either way, back to the grind.

The picture is not at all bad. If you know the original in some context. The original is about a guy standing up when no one else wants to stand. He's the guy rising to his feet and deciding to take a stand. If you know the original. The guy does not have the most secure look on his face, but he's standing up anyway.
Once again: go read the cover of Esquire with Obama on the cover. This is why we need someone like Obama at this time. If you want to be cynical. Be cynical. It's your choice but people need to believe again. They need to believe again in their country.

Is a pic of Obama, arms open wide, with the caption, "Lo, I stand at the door and knock..." far behind?
Its becoming clear. DP's only fear is that Obama will be assassinated. But that fits the narrative! Martyrdom, and then sainthood (unless He -- gasp! -- rises from the dead!!!) Here's one Jew that ain't forsaking another Messiah!

This image is garnering much more interesting reactions than I expected, actually.
To me, it was just funny... here is the elitist made into a Rockwell Tom Joad.
I don’t know where the deification comes from. I do find that the most fascinating at all.
The original image, one of Rockwell’s Four Freedoms series, was used to sell War Bonds in WWII. It’s not set in a church. It’s not about God. But people are listening.
Is that really so uncomfortable for y’all?

As far as I'm concerned, we're in a post-Rockwell world. He was a great artist, but he came from a very different time and context, and mashing Obama into one of his works seems like an attempt at a hard sell. I said "Reagany" because it feels like the same "Morning in America" kind of thing he excelled at. It kind of reminds me of those pseudo-war ads for Pearl Harbor with Hartnett and Affleck in them.

And mystery... being an asshole and taking one detail of my comments out of context to try to paint a false picture of me doesn't make you smart or effective. It makes you as pathetic as so many other people out there who can't feel good about their arguments based on the actual argument and not spin.
And is that a bit of Jew baiting in there? Not sure... right up to the edge line...
In the end, this why Obama actually can win... because for as stupid as Americans often seem, they have unexpected instincts. They appreciate what they sense to be the truth, which is why the speech on race worked and none of the Wright stuff seemed to be a real problem in exit polls.
Obama comes from my universe more so than any candidate ever. I understand how that appeals to my personal vanity. I also understand, because of that, how he is as human as any of us. I don't need to deify him or turn him into a cartoon. Others seem to.
I sat with a bunch of 60s/70s liberals yesterday that all but called Obama a nigger. They are intensely resistant. They are not ready. But they will all vote for him in the end because of what he stands for as a politician. And they will be proud of themselves for doing it if he wins.

P.S. This is why I post things like this, Joe. People show themselves.
I don't see them as "hateful motherfuckers." I see very few people as "hateful motherfuckers." If I did, I would be limiting my perspective, just as they do.
I kind of wish that there was a facility in this system to force anyone who wanted to comment more than once a week to use their real name, so this community would be transparent. I don't care who is who, but I do think when people go extreme that they should have to stand by their words.

I hope people didn't think I was being hateful. I just thought it was amusing how much it reminded me of any movie set in a small town where people stand up against the big corporations.

David--
You take yourself way too seriously. Your arrogance and devotion to Obama blind you to what was obvious satire. My comments were smart AND effective, in the way they so easily expose this fact. Pathetic? Pathetic is a mere mention of your Jewish heritage ringing your Anti-Semite Alarm. Instincts? Go back and read all of your posts and come back and tell me why it shouldn't raise the hairs on the back of my neck. Its positively creepy.
