WANTing To Be The Matrix
I don't know whether it's actually the movie or if it's just the marketing, but the new trailer for Wanted suggests pretty clearly that McAvoy is Neo, Jolie is Trinity, Freeman is Morpheus, and the world is still broken while this clique of assassins are in "reality."
Shooting the wings of flies = fighting in the dojo.
It would also appear that the depth of the philosophy is much shallower than The Matrix... but it will look really cool.
Now I am much more curious.
P.S. The running load of sales pitches that come along with a MySpace embed is a reason why studios should not be putting their trailers on MySpace exclusively. It's obnoxious. I understand why MySpace does it... but not why studios go along with it. When will they learn that exclusivity and viral don't match up well?

Sorry Dave,
I just don't see what's enticing your interest. I do see the connection to the Matrix, but it just seems like a shittier, less interesting version.
The curving of the bullet and shooting of fly wings are just too preposterous to be exciting. . . an issue I have with a lot of special effects these days.

What entices my interest is the balls of stealing The Matrix and remaking it so soon, so thin.
But I won't know what I think of the film until I see it.
Nightwatch and Daywatch are interesting pictures with remarkable visuals that induce explosive headaches for many people. Did the filmmaker stick to a narrative here? Don't know. Was there a script that worked? Don't know. Will is be better than wallpaper or amazing or shite? Don't know.
But this pitch does seem to distinguished what they are after...

I wasn't really interested all that much in the film until someone who had read the comic alerted me to what the story is really about.
(Possible spoilers ahead I suppose...) Anyway, I was told that they aren't just a group of hitmen, they are a secret society of villains; so it's essentially like watching a superhero film, but from the perspective of the bad guy. I don't know if the film sticks to that, but when my buddy told me that premise, it definitely raised my interest level a few notches.

Um, I don't know if any of you caught the Russian trailer that AICN posted a week ago, but it's remarkably similar to this one. I figure they went ahead with this one after the Russian one got raves all over the internets.
Unfortunately, this one loses the gore, which was the best part of the Russian one. They would do well to release a Redband.

I'm excited to see this mostly because I was a huge fan of Nightwatch and Daywatch. I think this guy really has the goods when it comes to hyperkinetic action cinema.
I can also confirm Noah's comments on the comic book to be true and after viewing the trailer I can't believe they're still going in that direction with the story. A shame too because it's a great concept.

I just have soo little interest in seeing this film...Maybe being over 30 I am not the demo, but it just looks like a bunch of better films bunched together...I can see it being swallowed by Hancock......Maybe a rental...
I am just over action movies being all style and no substance...Where are the summer theme park movie rides???? The Aliens....The Die Hard....The Jurassic Park....The Independence Day... Granted a variety of quality there....But you left the theater experiencing a summer ride....here is hope The Dark Knight is the real deal......and yes...I like Iron Man too....but the ending was under whelming and lacked that summer ride quality....

Good call on the Matrix connection, DP. And it does seem to be more than just a similar 'vibe'-- characters and narrative similarities abound in that particular trailer. Don't know anything more about the movie or the comic its based on, so we'll see.

Couldn't pay me to watch this if this is the guy who did Nightwatch. I like my cheesy low-budget action movies as much as the next guy (Equilibrium, anyone?), but damn, that movie was basically unwatchable. Least likable lead actor I can recall.

I wasn't much of a Nightwatch fan either. It seems like one of those movies that has more cachet than it deserves because it's a foreign movie (to Americans). If it was the exact same movie but with an American director's name on it, it would have been dismissed.

It looked like, from the Russian trailer, that there are elements of Fight Club to it as well.
I'm hoping that when it comes to ripping off two solid properties, it's closer to the Stone Temple Pilots of cinema than the Creed.

How does one get shallower than a puddle?

The only reason to see this is that it features an original song written and performed by composer Danny Elfman!!

Agreed on Night Watch and Day Watch, DP.
Based on this trailer, I want to give Wanted the benefit of the doubt.
Based on Night/Day, I'm gonna bet Wanted is just an exercise in visual style and not a satisfying movie by most counts.

A bit off the topic, but have you guys seen the red band trailer for The Happening? I didn't like it at all. It revealed too much of the plot and it seems too cliche. You'll understand when you see this. Anyway, it's worth checking it.

Man, I liked the Red Band trailer for The Happening, and I don't even like Shyamalan. It's too bad early word is bad on that flick.

Wanted does just look like a crappier version of The Matrix with even less of an excuse for it's preposterousness. That "curving the bullet" thing is ridiculous. And what makes it even worse is that in the trailer McAvoy's character goes from being a "what, me?" kinda guy to a lethal professional assassin in a single beat (and seemingly in the same scene in the feature).
The trailer actually reminds me of Die Hard 4.0 where after every stunt there were jokes from the crowd going "so realistic!"

Seems OK to me, since the Wachokiwishiskies stole the Matrix from that one chick who sued em. turnabout and all that bunk.

It's not the Matrix! For goodness sake! The story is over the top because the source was, a comic book mini-series.

Reach a little and do some homework.

I have no idea if the film conforms to the comic... but even if it does, they are selling it in as Matrix form. There is not one iota of indication a series of characters with alternative powers.
And that looney who claims the matrix... oy.

Dp, that's why I come here! I LOVE your own "looney" ideas (loved Matrix Reloaded, Speed Racer, can't stand TAOJJBTCRF, There Will Be Blood, Phantom for Best Pic!!!). Don't ever change, man!!!
