hell, cnn just reported that mccain isn't even going to the rnc...they're saying he may accept by satellite....

I feel even further confidence the GOP is handing the election to Obama. Even our gurly man guv'nr is avoiding the RNC like a plague (in his typically calculated shift to Democract)...

Both Bush and Cheney are out.

Now they're talking about either postponing the convention or...

Turning it into a telethon for the GOP to raise money for N.O. with McCain obviously making a big photo-op down at the scene of the storm...

my favorite announcement, so far, this morning was that 'even though the balloons are in place, they've decided there won't be a balloon drop at the time of the nomination....they've decided it would be inappropriate and, besides, it's been done before'....
that was on 'fox & friends'....really....

It's got nothing to do with global warming, really! Serves the Repubs right.

Because nothing says compassion and competence better than making a melodramatic show out of how bound and determined you are not to colossally fuck things up again exactly three years later to avoid the bad press. (And before anybody hyperventilates, the same goes for the NO and LA authorities, too. But they get credit for actually living there and dealing with it.)

I wonder how many times during the next few days we're going to see that photo of Bush and McCain celebrating the latter's birthday while Katrina came calling on N.O.?

And I wonder how many times we'll hear pointed references to FEMA and Bush's "appointment of unqualified people to important government positions" between now and Thursday?

So, it's looking more and more that the convention is now going to be a GOP call to action to help N.O.

Obviously, they'll be trying to make McCain look like a take charge leader, etc.

The question is whether it makes him look good, or whether it blows up in his face for seeming to make a political situation out of a disaster?...

A lot I hope. I posted that photo on my blog. Good to remind people how our national security prez dealt with America's biggest natural disaster.

Monday has effectively been cancelled. They'll conduct only essential business for about 2 1/2 hours in the afternoon. That's it for Day 1.

You know... this was actually not meant to be a political entry... just an opportunity for people to vent on the fears of NO being smashed again.

I posted something today about this, but I recall going through New Orleans in April of 2007. It was a vast difference, not only physically, but spiritually from the town I had visited during Mardi Gras just two years prior.

It's a shame that one of the most vibrant and crackling cities in the union looks to be brought to its knees once again.

If we lose NO twice in the same fucking decade, that bloody sucks. Here's to the freakin Corp of Engineers actually fixing those levees to the point, that they can survive a level 3 Hurricane. If not; I hope the next administration actually rebuilds New Orleans instead of letting people move back into still decaying neighbourhoods.

for over a decade we would trade the use of our p.s. condo for the use of a lovely family's home in the quarter during either mardi gras or jazz fest.... unfortunately, that hasn't been an option since katrina and we have sung that song with feeling ever since...

having (even temporary) use of an upstairs flat with two-sided balcony on a major parade route (and within spitting distance of the bourbon pub) for so many years made us feel more like natives than tourists.....

sorry to have ignored the original intent of the thread....imo, it was one of the three greatest cities in the u.s. so, the answer would be yes.....

Some of the floodwater surge is climbing over the levees, but thankfully no breaches so far. I love that city; been so many times, great food, atmosphere out of a gothic novel, awesome photography for buffs like myself.

Question: why weren't the levees built higher? 10-12 feet higher, and nothing comes over it. Am i missing something?

Not sure if anyone here actually ever watches Fox News, but last week on the anniversary of Katrina they ran a video package detailing the events. I think Bush OWNS and that Fox-bashing is overrated, but even I was amused that they edited the piece to show W. arriving on the scene lickety-split with ROUSING MUSIC and powerful shots of him saluting everyone and pensively figuring out a solution, like his leadership ran the storm out of town.

It was so blatant it bordered on awesome.

What does this even mean? Chucky, you do understand that things called 'cities' tend to have larger concentrations of people in them, right?

That last comment from Chucky is one of the most incredibly stupid things I think I've ever read. Stick to your Manhattan/Bucks County/Jersey release patterns obssession, pal. You have a supremely fucked-up sense of how anything works.
