TIFF - A Theme Rises

Great cinema in times of war is rarely about war directly. I am not 100% sure whether this is the subtext or context for the wave of deep, rich, but lighter films about family in Toronto this year.

The finest example so far is Arnaud Desplechin's magnificent A Christmas Tale, which launched at Cannes in May. Two films from the sublime Kings & Queen, the film tells the tale of a family broken and mended by a loss and the very nature of the individual. Similar terrain as Rachel Getting Martied, but a lot closer (and far away from) Tom Bezucha's The Family Stone. (In a twist, Bezucha is currently working on a remake of the French film, Man On The Train, another example of great emotion-driven French filmmaking.)

More later...

I need to see that movie NOW. Man, I love Arnaud Desplechin and Kings and Queen.

I read THE STONING OF SORAYA M script - if it turned out well (with Shohreh Aghdashloo), it will be 18 months ahead of the current war curve.

I saw an Aussie movie today called Three Blind Mice, which has vague things to say about the war (it's about three army men who all joined after 9/11 and who are being shipped off again, but it's not so much about that as the crazy shenanigans they get up on their final night) and it was very good. If anyone gets the chance to see it at a festival, you should try and get to it. And I'm not just saying that as an Aussie. I saw three other Aussie movies today, none of which I'd demand to rush out an see anytime soon.

Any comment on Passchendaele?

Anyway, The Wrestler has won the Golden Lion in Venice and Mickey Rourke seems a lock as best actor nominee for the Oscars...

"a lock"? How exactly? There is no such thing as a lock at this stage especially when it comes to a person like Mickey Rourke starring in a Darren Aronofsky movie.

a nomination may be possible but rourke will have to re-build a lot of bridges for a win... i'm seeing it next week so my op may change (but i doubt it)......

"may be possible" is acceptable. "a lock" is ridiculous. Even if he does get a nomination in five months time you'll never be able to say he was a lock from this far out. He's not Meryl Streep and Darren Aronofsky isn't... some director who gets a lot of nominations.
