Drudged

Ya know... Drudge deciding that the news that Sarah Palin was found to have behaved inappropriately in Troopergate was not worth a link for the first 12 hours or so after it was released, then burying it, then pulling it after just a few hours on the site... well, politics as usual from the self-loathing one.

But I clicked on the "Obama goes door-to-door to drum up voites" story that went with the picture of Obama kissing a pretty, blonde white woman on the cheek while touching her arm, precariously close to her breast... and the picture was not associated with that wire service story.

Maybe I am playing the race card... but that awkward picture of unknown origin seems to me to be a placement for the "fear the black man coming after your white women" voter.

You tell me.

Spot on. Was having the exact same thought when I first saw the picture this morning. Now that I know that the picture wasn't from said event, my suspicion feels validated.

'but that awkward picture of unknown origin seems to me to be a placement for the "fear the black man coming after your white women" voter.'

I am suprised the caption didn't just read: "There Goes The Neighborhood!"

Agree that this seems typically slimy for drudge but how many Drudge readers a really in play? I would think that the majority of people who read that site are already committed to McCain.

By posting this you're just doing his work for him and propagating his "news" outside his narrow sphere of influence.

Posted by: Krazy Eyes [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 09:39 AM

Lord, is Drudge even relevant anymore?

He might have been one of the first through the door, but so many legitimate journos have hit the ether that a snapshot of the blogosphere before/after would like those pics of San Francisco before & after the Gold Rush (with a little arrow pointing to a new brick building that says "Drudge's Tent's Former Location")

Agree, you are just giving him traffic that would otherwise be heading towards TMZ.

Besides, shouldn't Drudge be down on his knees in thanks that an Obama Presidency is right around the corner to restore his crappy site to the position of Unloyal Opposition?

Posted by: RoyBatty [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 09:59 AM

Sorry, Roy and Krazy. David and I might have our differences -- hell, we may have issues -- but he is spot-on and dead-to-rights here. This is another variation of those nasty, not-so-subtly racist TV spots that ran in the Tennessee senatorial campaign a while back, with the same not-too-subtle message: The black dude is after the white women. Drudge should have this hung around his neck, and be brought to task.

This is fair to point out, but the news that Drudge is a right leaning yellow journalist is old news at best. I roll my eyes when he delves into the Hollywood stuff which always seems to have a negative slant. My favorite was the King Kong Headline a week before release "Bigger Than Titanic". Way to set expectations, that headline helped usher in the age of the "200 Million Dollar Grossing Box Office Disappointment".
What's bugging me is the stories of McCain egging on racists and know nothings across the land. It seems every cub reporter is racing to interview every fringe type on the scene at a McCain. If you have your hair uncombed and your fly down reporters are pushing a microphone in front of your face. It's effective because it does play to some primal fears.
Obama was in North Philadelphia this weekend. I live near Philly, there are some amazing insights to be mined from the folks here. Nobody went there. The LA times ran this quote on their report of the event:

"Retired teacher Beverly Wood, 59, responded well. "I've seen him on TV, in the debates. But to see him in person . . . he's so engaging.

"I've never felt like this before. It's a very strong emotional connection, a spiritual connection."

Dowd, Frank Rich, Huffington, everyone is riding the McCain rally cesspool train in coordination. It seems calculated. I don't mind if Obama wins I hate being manipulated. At least with Drudge you know what your getting.

Drudge is just a professional troll, and he knows it. And I agree with RB, I don't think he has the influence he once had. But I get a kick out of him linking to every single article in the press that mentions his name, as if telling his reading audience "SEE! I'M FAMOUS!".

The Willie Horton ad of Campaign '08?
Nah, this goose is cooked.
Can you believe the cojones of First Dude Todd? After getting his ass reamed by the Troopergate report, he's still out stumping with the missus.
Republicans not only lack scruples and common decency, but apparently even couth and a modicum of introspection are beyond their limited capabilities.
How long after the election before VH1 (or CMT) signs the Palins for their very own "Osbournes"-type reality sitcom?

Posted by: movieman [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 01:11 PM

Drudge is still one of the most read news sites on the web. I doubt one gets that many hits from only one side of the isle. The thing of it is: Drudge has pulled a total douche move by backing McCain. He spends most of this year rooting on Obama. Only to turn on the man at the end? What a fucking self-hating ass among other things like a racist. His playing into the inherit racism is shocking, but he hates himself. So I guess this should not surprise.

Posted by: IOIOIOI [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 02:26 PM

IOIO it's shouldn't be a big mystery to you. Drudge supported Obama during primary season because he wanted to see Hilary go down. The fall of Hillary was the big story, everybody from the other side of the aisle watched in glee.
But now for the general election you stick with your team.
The Obama picture is pretty entertaining, I have a sneaking suspicion that Drudge's primary motivation is page hits. I'm not convinvced he's a racist. I am convinced that term gets thrown around too loosely.

Posted by: MDOC [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 03:45 PM

The Liberal Media worship Drudge Report. Why? The Liberal Media are owned and/or controlled by the right wing. Drudge is a right-wing snitch who relies on hearsay and pays sources for stories.

What was that phrase? "Snitches Get Stitches"?

Posted by: Chucky in Jersey [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 04:06 PM

That phrase did not exist until 4:06.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 04:07 PM

Drudge thinks Palin is good for hits, so he will do anything to maintain that.

He once said Hillary was good for business too. I think he found Obama wasn't particularly good for hits.

I know Republicans who are just as disgusted by the Palins as the Democrats I know, so lumping them in with the Republicans who cheer the couple does a disservice to reality.

And, while on the topic of disservices to reality, it's almost mystifying to watch Governor Palin and her husband sailing past accountability like nothing can touch them; running on self-delusion like an alternative fuel. As if the moral of "The Emperor's New Clothes" was admiration for the emperor's ability to soldier on nakedly in the face of reality.

I'd like to know where MDOC draws the line between "loose" and "strict" uses of the term "racist." Does MDOC see any similarity between the photo of Obama+Blonde and, say, a Vogue cover of about 5 or 6 months ago?

http://www.slate.com/id/2187797/

Does the fact that "Where the white women at?" (thanks, doug r) is one of the most memorable jokes in a comedy whose raison d'etre is to lampoon the idiocy of this kind of racism make no impression? Or that the idea of sacrificing your white dates to the frightening virility of black men in a juke joint is probably the most singularly unfunny gag in an otherwise riotously funny movie? You posted it -- I guess you think it's the equivalent of Cleavon Little baiting a couple of Klansman. I wish Poland had asked Peter Riegert if he thinks that scene is still funny during "Lunch with David."

How about other uses of Obama's image, like hanging him in effigy from a tree?

http://chronicle.com/news/article/5251/university-disciplines-4-students-for-hanging-effigy-of-barack-obama

The Chronicle of Higher Education presumably caters to highly educated people, but in the comments people defend even this act as protected speech. But at what point does Matt Drudge's freedom to post suggestive photos of Barack Obama pass the Constitutional test of crying fire in the theater, knowing that he's already being lynched symbolically? Or after what happened to Harold Ford in Tennessee ("Harold, call me")?

Matt Drudge may not be a racist, but the using the image of Obama kissing a white woman to play to his audience's worst impulses sure is. Hey, as long as he gets his page hits, right?

Posted by: Not David Bordwell [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 04:49 PM

MDOC: I believe in folks. I thought the brother had seen the light, but he still had a hate-on for Hillary. Shameful little goober. I hope the heat in Miami is keeping him... happy.

Jeff: It did not exist to your daft ass. Seriously; you need to get out of Silverlake and experience more cultures! COME ON, MAN! COME ON!

Let me also add that I live in Tennesse and while those ads were horrible. Harold comes from Memphis. The rest of the state dislikes Memphis. You see where I am going with this?

Posted by: IOIOIOI [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 05:08 PM

What, was 'snitches get stitches' from a West Wing episode? I don't live in Silverlake.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 05:15 PM

There was an episode of Maher's show (I think it was the season premiere) where he showed a pic that made Obama and Biden's wife look like they were almost kissing that Maher said was on Drudge's site.

Posted by: CaptainZahn [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 05:51 PM

OK Bordwell, I'll bite. One question, do you think the Vogue cover is racist? The article you linked to defended it. I'm not sure of the tie in to Drudge's Obama picture. Your reaching.

The Animal House bit is funny, it a huge physically intimidating person coming up and trying to take a guy's woman. It's very funny to me. I also liked a similar scene in Weird Science. But I'm most interested in your answer to the Vogue picture.

Posted by: MDOC [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 06:43 PM

"How long after the election before VH1 (or CMT) signs the Palins for their very own "Osbournes"-type reality sitcom?"

That would be cool with me. It's exactly where they belong, and it would be easy enough to ignore.

Posted by: frankbooth [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 07:37 PM

I was being provocative, and that's a fair question, MDOC. I basically agree with the Slate analysis, which was less a defense of the cover than a dismissal of the overreaction to it. The juxtoposition of the cover with the Kong poster proves, to me, that Annie Leibovitz is too smart a semiotician not to have known what she was doing in her composition of the image, but this does not mean she is racist -- only that she expects some of her intended audience to spot the homage. Personally, I find the "King Kong as stereotype of primitive, violent black male libido" far-fetched -- much more offensive is the stereotype of the natives on Kong island in the original 1933 release (and Africa Screams, and on and on).

Racists, of course, don't need LeBron James with full-on gameface to equate black men with apes and monkeys:

http://chronicle.com/news/article/5251/university-disciplines-4-students-for-hanging-effigy-of-barack-obama

And let's not forget those adorable T-shirts featuring Barack Obama as a banana-eating Curious George type.

The "reach" you think I'm making is the black man with his lips and his hand on the white woman -- and he's going door to door! Get it? He probably asks for a cup of white sugar at every household!

Look, if I got into the history of miscegenation laws and Jim Crow, everybody would find me pedantic, but just like lynching, these are real things that happened in this country in the not so distant past, they continue to happen from time to time, and these feelings keep simmering under the surface, waiting for some slimeball to take political advantage of them -- or generate page hits -- or whatever.

Your read of the Animal House scene ignores the "joke" that they're the only white kids in the joint, and that the threat of physical violence is what makes "Leaving! What a good idea!" work as a gag at all. Har! He's so scared he runs away, leaving their dates to dance with "a huge physically intimidating person." And a guy who looks like a pimp. But, whatever -- if they weren't sluts to begin with, why'd they leave the dorm, right? If the rest of the film had any more positive image of black men than "Hey, they make great entertainers!" I might give it a pass, but since it doesn't, the scene doesn't work for me at all.

Posted by: Not David Bordwell [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 08:10 PM

It's a rather common expression Jeff, and slagging the West Wing makes you look silly.

Posted by: IOIOIOI [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 09:11 PM

Drudge is a creepy hack yellow "journalist" pimping for the GOP. He routinely does not post big stories that bode ill for his team. And his images are often coded. He's a slime.

Posted by: christian [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 09:39 PM

Does he still wear that stupid fucking fedora?

This is a very side-to-offtopic question, but O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck and Drudge seem to receive the lion's share of lib scorn...

...but is there truly anything more insufferable than Greta Van Susteren's show on Fox? I actually enjoy O'Reilly's out-there take on things and intentional smarm; Hannity is a proper blowhard. As is clownish Beck.

But Van Susteren seems the most blatant in blurring the lines while being passive-aggressive in her sour shtick. She gets me more annoyed than the rest of the lot.

Posted by: LexG [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 09:58 PM

IOI, it may be an expression, but on objective terms, it is not common.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 13, 2008 11:34 PM

It's not common in your part of the world. Where there are apparently very little snitches. Good for you.

Posted by: IOIOIOI [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 14, 2008 12:23 AM

"Snitches get stitches... BITCHES."

That photo looks like a bad photoshop job to me. Check out the odd way his arm extends to that large hand. I think it's a fake...

Posted by: Crash115 [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 14, 2008 11:25 AM

And note the disparaging "to drum up votes" for the Obama Kissing De White Woman photo. Drudge is such a scumbag and Andrew Sullivan should stop praising him so much. But birds of a feather...

Posted by: christian [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 14, 2008 12:02 PM
