Why Do Studios Do Cocktail Events For Press?
Someone asked me this last night at the Dark Knight event, which was very pleasant and saw all players in a lovely mood. (Mr. Nolan and I had a great chat about digital cameras and IMAX and the like... and somehow never felt compelled to ask about who would play what villain in a future film... oooohhhh. He did, however, knock down the rumor about shooting the next Bat-film in all IMAX, as the camera is still too loud.)
In any case, wire stories like this, from the AP, is why.
(And truth is, I do think the Batman window has widened as the season has progressed. So there!)
But this is an industry of cause and effect. And it is Dave Germain's job to do that story. And so it goes.

Dave, do you mind elaborating on Nolan's views of digital photography? He strikes me as a purist when it comes with abandoning film in favor of video. In fact, "The Dark Knight" feels like a throwback to the sprawling, large canvas epics that necessitate the need for old fashion celluloid in a way a lot of recent, CG-heavy action films do not.

I don't see a point in here, really. What is the actual issue with writing about it? It's one thing to toss in mundane banter like what Germain got from the principles, I guess. I put something up with a little more meat on its bones, but it's all just quick reporting from the scene really. So again, what's wrong with that?

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it... nothing I wrote or think suggests that you (or Dave or anyone else who wrote about it) should feel bad about.
While I believe that movies should be surprising and magical, I believe that journalism should be transparent. So, just answering the question that was asked of me. Why is WB spending a lot of money to have their talent drink with a room of journalists?
As I also pointed out to the person who asked, half the room was LAFCA, who will be voting next Saturday. Other voting groups were represented as well.

Tis me
It only seems that way since you are so freakin' high baby.
Stop the light as air commentary- get back to excoriating the Academy for not voting your way or something.

Sorry that shredding FIND, The New York Times, SAG, NBR, WGA, Clint Eastwood, the Academy frontrunners, junketeers, David Carr, Rob Pattinson, etc, hasn't been enough for you this week.
Should I be attacking The Hollywood Reporter on the way out or getting into the slap fight between The Hack and The Whack?
I've never excoriated anyone for not voting my way... you must be thinking you are someone else's blog.

Disingenous much? You shredded Rob Pattinson and that wasn't helium related? Uh huh....

Now I don't have the slightest idea what you are talking about again.
But I think I'm pretty much done wondering about it.

It's weird I have been accused of being so many things by unclear ain't one of them.

I assume you meant "but unclear" not "by unclear"...

Boo fucking hoo.
I don't know what you want, Don.
And you don't seem to want to tell me, aside from these non-comment comments.
I will now waste my time - as cranks always make me do - trying to figure out what the drama is about. And I will likely find, as usual, nothing but someone who was projecting some unknown thing.
I like you, Don. But I have no idea what the hell you are on about. And I don't really think you do either about now.

Dave:
If you think these press cocktailers are such an absurd
waste of time, why do you continue to go to them?
Serious question.

Lucky... again... as I noted to Kris... when did I say anything about the cocktailers being absurd or a waste of time... or anything negative?
Are you thinking that because Kris took it that way that I mean something other than what I have written?
I go because it is part of maintaining relationships with a variety of people in that room. I do not go to see talent, though I am not offended by those who do, and I am often very happy to see the talent I do see. Darren A. and I and my wife had a nice chat about New Jersey last night and Rachel W., as sweet as ever, really enjoyed A Christmas Tale. Danny B. seemed to be having a great time. And the holy trinity of Searchlight were pleasant and charming and chatty, though nothing we discussed was really meant to public consumption, much like some in depth conversations with some personal publicists.
And then we stayed for dinner with friends.
I had a very nice time, even though I was in a fairly foul mood.
This post exists, as I stated before, because I was honestly struck by someone who is not in the press corps asking the question, "Why is this event happening?" and then seeing Dave Germain's piece and thinking, "that is why it is happening." It is Dave's job to write that piece and I have no problem with that. I assume that a Tapley piece today on a screening of The Wrestler along with two classics at the Aero came out of last night's cocktail... and I have no problem with that. It's the gig.
And a part of what I do is to pull back the curtain. Why does that have to get me tagged as a hater?
