Great Button Backgrounder

The endlessly surprising Mark Wheaton (once known as "Smilin' Jack Ruby" to geeks everywhere) was kind enough to offer MCN the chance to give him the space to tell the story of the woman who is real person behind Cate Blanchett's Daisy in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Tremendous piece... and who knew that Mark was a ballet aficionado?

Read it here.

I absolutely loved this piece-- it was even beautiful. What is odd is that I found this article to be just as affecting if not more so than the movie of Ben Button itself.

The last line about the picture Robbins kept of Tanny really struck a chord with me and in many ways serves as a great compliment to the movie itself.

I would love to see some material on this pop up on the dvd.

Thank you Mr. Mark Wheaton!

Ballet is an underserved story. Not even a Disney ballerina princess. Yes, I'm a fan.

Would it have killed you to mention that Smilin' Jack Ruby used to write for AICN, Dave? I know it kills the idea that great, professional writing can actually come out of that website, but fair is fair.

This should have been part of the press materials for the film, it enhances the story as well as Blanchett's contribution, no? I also have more respect for Roth's uneven screenplay because of it.

Most of my experiences with SJR were after he was at other places... and he was at other places. So yes, he was at AICN in the early days and no, that is hardly the only place he penned stuff under than moniker. (When he wrote for roughcut, he used his real name.)

As for AICN in general, I have always said that there are many good writers there and have hired a few over the years. I think the culture holds some back, as they feel they have to play to the mob. But it is a site of people who love movies and of course there are many good things to come of that, including Mark.
