I keep looking for option D - stick it in.

Ahem... I think folks go to see movies because they are still the lowest (and cheapest!) common denominator of entertaimment between people.

And if it's true that people go to the movies movies more when their incomes drop then it proves ones and for all that movies are an Inferior Good...

....at least economically speaking.

That is to say that Poland is, in fact, wrong. Movies aren't that cheap but they are the cheapest way to go out.

There's only so much disposable income people can spend so when they cut down on "premium Supermarkets (like Whole Foods), and expensive auto sales" they use that money elsewhere. Yes, they may stash a lot of this difference at home but they also redirect parts of it to the cheaper complete entertainment that movies provide.

It's not so much about how inflexible movies are to changes in incomes but how flexible the alternatives are.

...And so the difference in the quality and appeal of movies tells only a part of the story. What David doesn't meantion and what other analysts have noticed is the difference in how the movies (even with tiny niche bases and low theater counts) are holding accross the board.

It it also worth noting that using 2008 for comparison is not the most accurate way to draw conclusions. These economic trends started before the recession was publically aknowledged because
