A Rant About Hollywood, Through The Prism Of The Girlfriend Experience

A blog regular, THX5334, turned up yesterday to blast the room with a muscular take about the reality of Hollywood, as reflected in existence of Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience.

I am seeing the movie tomorrow and speaking to its star next week. But what struck me about THX's rant was that it really wasn't about the film specifically or about Sasha Grey exclusively, but about the idea of the industry mindset about real life male/female relations right now. It's certainly angry and has the depth of thought that suggests some gathered experiences with this situation. Some might think it misogynistic, but there is blame and pain all around. It seems to be worth discussing.

I have done a little editing... just to make a few things make more sense.

I must say, I have always seen we men as the predators in this town, even with plenty of golddigging around. But I started keeping my distance from these situations a long time ago.

Here's THX...

There is just a major hooker fascination going on in TV and Film right now (Dollhouse, BSG/Caprica, GF Experience) because these square actors and filmmakers in Los Angeles are getting chewed up and spit out by this younger breed of female predators that are 30 and under, getting their hearts broken, turning to escorts for intimacy (or scumbag worry free wife cheating) - AND THEN - putting this dysfunctional female personality type in their work, thus spreading the ways of this new LA based, youthful female predator who always has a rotation of lovers on speed dial, making each one think they are the only one.

And let's be clear 9 times out of 10, this girl is college educated, comes from an upper middle class family, and has, sadly, suffered some form of abuse from a man, and thusly pull a similar form of abuse or control. But instead of it being (directed towards) some asshole who deserves it, (it gets aimed at) the nice filmmaker who always got shot down by chicks when he was a kid, and would probably be a cool partner (until success gets to his head).

This female-as-sexual-predator-to-get-ahead that is emanating it's way into the under twenty females is a far far cry from the other kind the girl who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks that's been through the ringer with men so bad, they appreciate real love over looks and latch onto it when they get it. These Hollywood types don't want that girl, because they have become chicks, and want the female equivalent of an asshole, just the same way women used to turn down the nice guy for the bad boy. Nowadays, these under-thirty Hollywood chicks will just bang them all, get as much profit as they can and then spit them all out, ruining them, all the while thinking it's okay to pay the bills by getting banged on a web cam simply because they got a degree in Philosophy and understand Nietzche. It's such justificational bullshit.

The filmmaker, in an attempt to make honest work, encourages the continuing dysfunctional female as sexual predator stereotype to young girls.

Because now, irregardless of the merit of Soderbergh's work as a piece of cinema, the subtext encourages this new and dysfunctional belief that having real sex on camera will get you mainstream success. Which was certified when Paris got her Carl’s JR commercial after her porn video came out.

And so more and more of these under thirty, LA based female sexual predators are being created as more young girls see in the culture created here in LA that femininity can be reached by being famous and using sex for personal gain, no matter how much you might really hurt the man you're devouring as long as it gets you rich and famous. And in effect, that sires the guy into becoming one of the real assholes that ruin it for nice guys because they've been traumatized. And let's be clear, these female sexual predators in LA, ruining nice men, got that way because they themselves were ruined by some real bastard of a man (almost always from some bastard that is older than Gen-X).

Comments

The best part is, THX later had some hilarious throwaway like, "I just whipped this up while I was waiting in line." Like, holy shit, what line was THAT? Not even the DMV or the Toluca Lake Post Office is slow enough to allow time for a screed of that magnitude.

More later...

what do you expect? Men are scum, women are whores.

Posted by: DeafBrownTrashPunk [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 6, 2009 10:02 PM

THX has posted stuff like this before. When he was supporting his weird dating site a month or so back. The dude is caught up in this whole "LA IS THE WORLD" nonsense, that completely ignores the nice ladies of Kansas.

Speaking of LA, game 2 of Lakers-Rockets is turning into a hockey game in the fourth quarter.

As long as hat chump Kobe catches some lumps, I'm down.

And it looks like THX got his ass handed to him by the girlfriend he was so happy with 3-4 months ago. Ah well.

Posted by: don lewis (was PetalumaFilms) [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 6, 2009 10:22 PM

And by "hat chump," I meant "that chump." Derrr....

Posted by: don lewis (was PetalumaFilms) [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 6, 2009 10:23 PM

I dunno, maybe he wears crappy hats and is a "hat chump."

Posted by: Blackcloud [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 6, 2009 10:27 PM

IOI, I don't think you have ever written anything that I agree with more.

Nothing against THX, and he makes some smart movie-criticism points in the above, but a lot of what he has to say on this subject has the tinge of, let's just say, unique personal experience.

Just trying to sign in here Dave. Been about a year scince I posted and I've missed you...

OK so it's late and I can't spell... and Type Key is lame. However is does appear that my lovely moniker is still approved for banter. Hooray!

Posted by: iloatheyou [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 7, 2009 01:29 AM

Ha ha, Lex, I had the same thought. Not only did he write the whole thing while standing in line, but he did it on his phone, too-- talk about an endurance test. Maybe he had also just finished a marathon on day ten of his hunger strike in hundred-degree heat?

Posted by: Eric [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 7, 2009 11:31 AM

Wow, first LexG gets a column now THX is getting a posting to discuss his thoughts. What ever happened to not feeding the seagulls? Dave, is this your way of making nice for abandoning the boards last month.? If I didn't know better I'd say this is becoming a community. I like it, although I must admit I couldn't make it through Lex's column, but I did try twice.

Hey you guys are such haters.Im thx girlfriend and i just read the post my boyfriend wrote and the comments you made on it(none off those are really interesting by the way,you just been hating).Dont you know that this is really happening?Do you guys live in LA?Its a real bubble here and girls will do any nasty thing they can to get a little bit of fame, money or simply power .And while they get use by a manager and/Or an agent,a good guy is been use by the girl just to make her feel better, superior. And they pretend to be with their boyfriend only and while he thinks he's the only one, they cheat on him with who knows how many, for ego or career.Im 25years old and i hear those things at work,in class, backstage, from my girlfriends.Thx takes all thoses informations from me.Plus everybody in LA knows it.

LA is not the center of the earth but ist the capital of film and music, were the culture is made. You can easily read the subliminal message forward to the young female generation in music(listen to lady gaga)and in tv or movies about getting what you want true sex.The subject can go on indifenetly, but how can you people that seem culturely wise, dont see it?Its obvious and it needs to be taken seriously or the next generation is gonna suffer from it.By the way, when thx was tiping on his blacberry the big post,we were waiting at CVS to get my birth controls pills,so you guys need to find better comments than those about the post he took time and energie to write for you guys. Excuse my english in french canadien.

I know a number of girls and they aren't like that. So, maybe people are looking in the wrong places.

Posted by: The Big Perm [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 8, 2009 06:39 AM

I'm not gonna say anything...but someone should....cuz THAT, was awesome.

Posted by: don lewis (was PetalumaFilms) [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 8, 2009 10:29 AM

Oh shit! You guys got the wifey riled up!

Well, I guess now you know where I mostly hear stuff.

But just for JeffMcM, I will relate another example I just witnessed the other night.

My girl and I live near The Grove on a pretty decent street. There are even some well known TV actors living there in some townhome style apartments, smartly stacking their money. Our street also happens to be populated with a ton of gorgeous women trying to be in front of the camera.

While taking our dog for a walk at 2am, several buildings down from us, I notice one of these predator girls getting dropped off by her date. I walk my dog around the same time, so I've seen this guy drop her off before. He is skinny, geeky, good vibe and it's obvious to anyone with deductive skills that he is either in love or getting there. As I'm walking by across the street, they are having a pretty hot and heavy make-out session next to his car, and I'm like "Yeah Pimpin', you've got that. Good for you)

I turn the corner and start walking Crescent Heights, where 5-10 minutes later, he passes me by on Crescent on his way to wherever.

2:45, I'm headed back home and on my street and see a Buck Johnson type in a new Mustang pulled up into her spot, and as I'm walking by, she comes out and jumps in his car, over night bag in hand.

This is what I'm talking about.

And in my observations, I hypothesized that it seems that this personality type is making it's way more and more to the work, based on the filmmakers experience, potentially creating destructive ideas or paradigms about feminity in impressionable women outside of LA's bubble.

It's a little ironic that those talking shit about me and this are people who live outside of LA and do not know of what they speak (Jeff, IO) Except for maybe Perm? Do you live here in LA? If so, of those women that you know that are not like that, how many of them are NOT in the business? And if they are, how many are trying to get in front of the camera? Meaning, that this female predator personality type is pretty much regulated to those circling Hollywood (Though you can find these predators in Law and especially Real Estate)

And Lex, I hope you don't speak French, because damn, my girl just smacked you pretty good. Or to translate it in a way you can understand it: you just got "owned" (feel free to click on her type pad if you want to put a face with the sting)

For those that haven't been around as long as to remember Lex before he became the THB rock star -

This whole subject of the female predator got started back in the day when Lex would constantly hijack threads in the middle of the night, drunk and sobbing about how lonely he always is because he can't meet girls. This would go on night after night after night. No insightful film commentary, no Dice-Man style conedy. Just night after night of "I AM SO LONELY!!! IF YOU'RE
NOT AN ACTOR OR FUCKING A MODEL, YOU'RE NOBODY!! IF YOU FUCK MODELS OR ACTRESSES YOU'RE A GOD!!"

And I'm sitting here in my head reading this crazy and saying to myself "Well, I'm fucking a model and I'm not rich or built like Brad Pitt. Damn, this guy needs help. He doesn't understand what he's dealing with. He doesn't get that his negativity and self loathing is an incredible sex repellent and that it doesn't have to be that way for him"

This is one of the things that got Kami and Laz and others as anti-Lex.

I freely was the very first guy to fall for his pity parties, trying to encourage him with his comedy, and to get into a class- and "especially" that him being alone wasn't his fault because chicks are a different breed here.

Did he listen? No. He talked shit back, kept continuing with the drunken, jokeless, crying late night hijacking tirades. Until I realized, this guy doesn't want any help losing his second virginity, if he did, then he wouldn't have an excuse to drink so much. And he turned down my advice or help everytime and went back to praising Paris Hilton as the ultimate woman.

So I called Lex out on his shit until I would get under his skin so bad, BYOB's became like Thunderdome. Then I gave up, realized I was getting too distracted being here and took time off to finish my script. And while I was gone and lurking, Lex became less abrasive, got rid of the old "You're only a man if you fuck a model" which quite frankly is an attitude that encourages these women to towards these values and behaivor.

(It's not hard to type fast Lex when you get paid to do it and are writing your own scripts and applying ones self instead of staying in the fear bubble, Coors in hand, complaining about how hard Hollywood is)

So anyways, that's how the whole explanation of this new female as predator personailty type that again, only is centralized to Hollywood. It was all started trying to help Lex get laid, so we all could get some peace of mind.

And while I am really flattered Dave felt my post worthy of it's own thread, I am not nor I have not been asking or pushing for a column. I'd rather use that time to try and make a real movie for everyone to either enjoy or rip apart and snark me over.

Oh and IO, are you determined to make enemies with everyone here? Last I counted, I think I was the only one that had your back, here. I'm sure if we ran a popularity or who likes who more, that even Jeff would rank above you. I used to think you were an egnimatic personality and understood why you felt the way you did about Lex and the column.

Now I am starting to wonder if everyone is right about you. That you really are just bat shit crazy. Albeit bat shit crazy with really good taste IMHO. But damn, kid. Do you treat all your friends this way?

*This post was written from the comforts of my own home. Any issues with length or grammar, are completely of my own doing and I don't give a shit cause I out the door.

Cheers.

In fact, back to work.

Oh, and, Thanks Honey. You are the shining example that there still diamonds in the rough out here for the good guys that deserve them.

blah, blah, blah. gimme lex ranting drunkenly any day

Posted by: leahnz [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 8, 2009 07:47 PM

When did it turn into a competition? I'm not trying to write a column here. Lex is and I feel that's awesome. I originally posted the original entry on a Byob that anyone is free to skip.

Ahh Leah the fact that you even say that is just cause you hate me and have a hair up your ass about me because I called Sex & The City out for being the jump off point for all of this. Which I am proud to say was the post that got you to come out of the shadows and become a regular poster. And I feel we are all the better for it. You may disagree with that notion, but I say check the archives.

But even though you do, the feeling is NOT mutual, and I think you're way cool.

"Es lo que es" as they say. Can't make everyone like you.

And are you saying that "Duchesse de Montreal" actually is (a) your girlfriend, and (b) a real person?

Hey Jeff its Thx girlfriend.I think it would be very sad if he would have made out that all girlfriend's profile of me.Did you even check my profile?I wanted to sign it cause nobody seem to get him and his view on females predators. However its a blog and how can you know if your dealing with honest people or not.I guest you just have to go with your gut feeling.Im checking out now,you guys have fun.

Whuh?

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2009 12:32 PM

THX I used to live in LA for awhile until I decided to go back east and do my own thing. I know a variety of females out there, actresses, models, stuntwomen reporters, regular office types, and a few porn stars. Most of that group is pretty chill and cool. Sure some of them are fucked up people, but not close to all of them.

Of course any type of power center is going to have a large number of predatory types. So LA is a hotbed of them. BUT, there are a ton of women I know out here in NY, DC and Baltimore who I could think of the same way and it has nothing to do with movies or whatever...they're just cheating lying types and who knows why they act that way.

I guess in my opinion people are assholes no matter where you go. And there are some good ones, too.

Posted by: The Big Perm [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 9, 2009 02:00 PM

the female predator thing is no different than the male predator thing. They are both bad, not needed and hurt alot of people...not to mention spread STDs!

MmeMontreal... à la mannequin--l'espoir ce que j'ai recommandé vous a aidé de toute façon.

I haven't lived in France in awhile so I hope that made sense.

Jeff, she answered you. What is not clear? She's French Canadian so English is her second language.

Translation: If you click on my type key, you will see my picture to verify it's me. And it would be really sad if THX went through all that trouble and put a picture up of someone on my typekey profile just to fake it. But it is a blog, so you never know. You just have to trust your gut.

She's real, we're real. If you're gonna make us prove it, fine. But only if it's a keg party at your house and everyone is invited. (actually if that was real, we would definitely show up)

Franklin and Vermont? So are you one of those east side hipsters with the heroin skinny jeans and litle Brad Pitt rat-pack fedora that every hipster is wearing? Not realizing that they're already recycling '97 Swingers look and that their pastiche has caught up with them? Is that you? I hope not. I doubt it.

Still... KEGGER AT MCMAHON'S !!

(5$ entry fee. Just pay THX and the Dutchess at the door and you're in like Flynn)

It's a funny thing... I think of people in here as real and honest... even if there is a layer of bullshit... the idea of accusing someone of making up a girlfriend... odd...

I am glad I posted this, even if it actually chafed the author a bit.

THX: I stated close to the same thing Perm stated. I also stated in the thread with Lex, that your assumption is looney tunes. Sure it can happen, but it does not mean it always happens that way. You seem to think that it does. I simply disagree.

Also... I stand alone and I like it that way.

Posted by: IOIOIOI [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2009 12:42 AM

Congratulations IO,

You have now taken over JeffMCM crown for most annoying due to be absolutely unable to consider someone else's point out of some psycho need to always be right.

Which means, if you're unable to ever see someone else's side, concede another point, keep an open mind - It just makes your opinion irrelevant.

Simply irrelevant.

You make McMahon seem like a Deprak Chopra with your crazy ego crap. I'm surprised you kept the text to an appearance of civility. Granted, condescending and snide civility - but when it comes to you I guess we'll take it.

Manners, son. Ever heard of them?

Oh wait, here comes the typical IO reply (minus the caps and exclamation points):

"You are such a douche; fuck you, fuck you. You should not play; fuck you, fuck you. Crazy, Crazy, More Crazy. Nobody understands the Matrix but me...More crazy, Fuck You, You should not play, You're a douche. Rinse and Repeat...

Oh and then some more fuck you's. But it will be all in caps and exclamation points.

Followed by some strange slur and insult involving bestiality, followed by claims how you are a huge hulking minority from the hardest ghetto parts of Tennessee, and don't fuck with you because you just got shot at.

Oh and I almost forgot, there will be some British slang thrown in that will make absolutely no sense, followed by claims how nobody here, including the real players, understands film like you.

Here it comes...3...2...1...

(Yawn)

Posted by: THX5334 [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2009 09:56 AM

One more thing to clarify with Perm and IO,

OF COURSE, these types of women exist in other professional circles.

But you can't seem to connect the dots or ideas that because there is a predominate porportion in Los Angeles, where a majority of the world's film and television projects are cast out of; and you get those types here.

Follow that with regular filmmakers getting played by these types of girls, putting their experience as character basis for females in their work (a la K-Stew's character in Adventureland for a recent example) and "possibly"
encouraging that personality type and behaivor so much that it has pervaded into female's where right now we have a culture of this female predator. Being an opprotunist with their sexuality by making regular dudes fall in love with them while they have whatever they want on the side and keep it secret.

You don't think all these other women that are like that, that perm and IO claim to be everywhere (I didn't say that; my experience is LA has it's own breed of female) - it couldn't possibly be from a subversion of the female identity in culture starting with Sex and The City and hasn't stopped?

So, you're saying that there's just some women like that everywhere.

In other words, you're turning this into a nature vs. nurture argument. And you guys are saying it's in some women's nature.

And I'm saying NO, it's a nurture thing. Started in the culture about a decade or so ago and ratified when Hollywood paid Paris big Carl's JR. and E! money for her Sex Video.

The GFE is just taking it to the next level.

I mean, I haven't seen the flick, but isn't the general idea is - Men don't just pay her for sex. They pay her for "intimacy" or "The Girlfriend Experience"

If that doesn't show a cultural shift where chicks have become the man and men have become chicks. Notice, I used the word "chicks". Because there is a WHOLE country full of real Women that this doesn't apply to...but is it spreading?

You guys wanna go ahead and tell your selves I'm making this up so you can sleep well at night; not wanting to acknowledge that it's even harder out there to meet a decent girl than you thought - Fine.

But let's be clear, I didn't make this up. I got the crux of it from two years of seeing my French Canadian GF come home from work, class, photo shoot, show, whatever and sit down and say. At first it was "You won't believe what these American girls were telling me..You won't believe what this girl did to her man" But after awhile living in this international city it just became

"You won't believe what these girls..."

And I do think it is very LA or media centric. These are females that have an insatiable need for power, attention and adoration and to be desired by anyone and everyone even more than money. And they will do anything to get it, no matter who they hurt.

But when you get more Sex and The City, Diary of a Secret Call Girl, Tila Tequila, I Love Money, Blank of Love, Dollhouse (FTR - I love this show. Fox is stupid if they cancel it); BSG and Caprica. Any reality game show where the women uses sex to win...

I think the idea is worthy of consideration. Not for us, but for the 12-15 year old girl.

I can't say that some kids weren't having sex when I was 13, because they were.. (Greeley, CO. will do that to anyone. Right Jeff?)

But my friend who is an 7th and 8th grade teacher called me not that long ago freaking out because she found out more than half of her female students were having anal and performing oral sex regularly all with the idea that it was okay because it wasn't tampering with their virginity.

I'm sure many have heard of this before, but WTF??

I like to consider myself as socially liberal and progressive as they come. But being progressive doesn't mean you don't have to be responsible. And where you draw the line is a subjective opinion.

I remember working with an at the time AD that has a long list of credits in this town (now a UPM), on my first script. Referred by a college professor, I paid this guy some real cash to do a budget and a schedule. He was also going to a Producer at one point.

I was in my early 20's and way impressionable and he was in his late 40's with two kids. So as we're breaking down the script and going through the elements of what we need, what will cost what...blah, blah, blah. Then we get to where we have to start making story changes that are needed to make the budget work, etc.

And this was back in '98 and Swingers is all the rage and LA is in it's rat pack bullshit phase, and so my AD/Producer with his two kids says...

"I don't think the characters should smoke. I hate it. It's glamourizes it to kids and leads kids to smoke and it's not crucial to the characters so I think we should cut it."

Of course he says this as his 9 year old son is right behind us in the driveway shooting baskets.

In my head I was like "Fuck You. That's the fucking characters." Of course, I was a smoker back then. But even as an ex-smoker I'd probably still fight for that.

And I get the need to fight for artistic expression no matter how controversial

Of course that valuable experience taught me that if you don't have your script tight, it doesn't matter anyways.

So yeah, everybody's got their issues and it's subjective where the line should be drawn.

I just feel after hearing the horror stories from my girl, and then seeing these chicks pop up in Adventureland, The GFE, Sex and The City, Tela Tequila...well maybe we should be paying attention...

I get it, it's easier to blame it on me being crazy, then consider reality. All good.

I mean, if you guys can afford the therapy for your kids, then who gives a shit right?

This is just the extension of the female that wants to date, heavily, but doesn't feel right not having a boyfriend. Sasha Grey works having sex (detachedly, as Don Lewis insights) but goes on Tyra Banks with boyfriend in audience and Scott Feinberg with fiance mentioned. Liv Ulmann used it differently in "Choices": she had a boyfriend back home to stave off advances.

THX, I'm sure that the above writer is actually your girlfriend. I'm just wondering if she may be a Replicant or Fembot of some kind.

Posted by: jeffmcm [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2009 01:30 PM

What's more fantastical, that she's real or fake? For argument sake, assume she's real. Is she a wife or girlfriend? Is there enough here for a short character description? All I really get, and it might be enough, is that she's a "one and only man" type.

Posted by: T. Holly [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2009 02:57 PM

I have a splitting headache and I have to go to Star Trek now.

Posted by: T. Holly [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 10, 2009 03:25 PM

It would rule if you could really hire Sasha Grey to be your girlfriend for the day.

We could sit around listening to "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit and watching "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" on DVD while drinking vodka and blue Gatorade, then we'd sit on the couch and read all my posts on Hot Blog for a couple hours.

Then somewhere around hour three, I'd finally work the nerve to ask if we could do something really tame, like I give her a neck massage or something, and she'd shoot back with those spiteful eyes and I'd be all, "Uh, never mind, you can go home early."

GOOD DATE.

THX: uh like... who cares? This is something that grinds your horn. I could care less about it. You have a woman, who apparently cares enough about you to post on this blog in her second language, and you really care about this nonsense that much? Really? Yeah... it has nothing to do with being right. It has everything to do with not giving a crap about this particular bit of business.
