This weekend certainly is Box Office Hell:

Product Placement
Name-Checking
TV-Based
Sequel
Name-Checking
Name-Checking (on an arthouse/upmarket title)

I'll be vegging out at home, thank you.

Will you be rocking back and forth on your stool under the exposed overhead lightbulb muttering to yourself about name checking and cutting up whores?

Maybe movies shouldn't be marketed at all. Just title them something like "Sony Romantic Comedy 2nd Quarter 2009" or "WB Potential Superhero Tentpole #012946B." And when we go to the box office, we determine what film we'll see by spinning a big wheel.

I should be sleeping, but whoah....Steve Mason is hearing that The Hangover did $17 million on Friday and that Land of the Lost did $8 million. Those are actually about the reverse numbers I saw each of those doing - guess Warners did a hell of a job marketing this thing and that reviews did make a difference. Hangover could possibly do $45 million - who would have thought that????

Meanwhile, he's projecting a good hold for Up of about $13.5 million, so it's going to be very close between that and Hangover - matinee's could make the difference.

Damn! But you know what made the difference here? A favorable review by Joe Leydon in Variety. Yeah, that's the ticket.

LOTL looks like ass and the reviews are fairly terrible. Good for the public.
