Bruno & The Hot Tub
I think it is worth pointing out GLAAD's obligatory and future-embarrassing statement about Bruno. Overall, the GLAAD reaction is a classic, "oh... this is funny... but the Neanderthals won't get it," bit of minority self-loathing... exactly the same as Jews and Borat.
This, however, is topped by a misleading statement, repeated again by CN Finke, that "Bruno (is) in a hot tub with his adopted infant son and two naked men involved in a sex act." Perfect for Drudge, but not accurate. (And somehow, Finke didn't read that the author saw the rough cut of the film months ago... but that is a relatively minor mistake which will surely disappear from her blog shortly after I push "print" on this.)
The scene is one of the film's PG-13-level dealings with sex. No frontal nudity. No dildos. And, in fact, no moving image. I will let the guy from GLAAD explain himself - "The scene suddenly veers to a photo of Bruno and the baby in a hot tub with a number of naked men, followed by a photo of what appears to be sexual activity between Bruno and the men in the background -- while the baby is still in the foreground of the photo."
Even that is a bit overreaching. The still frame/photo is one guy, "doing an Eminem." This, obviously, suggests man-on-man 69... or at least the potential of it. And we don't know - I suspect not - that the child in question was even in the tub when all this happened or if he was superimposed into the frame later.
That said, all in all, the baby being left in the car in The Hangover with a window cracked for air in the Las Vegas heat is a far more concerning image of adult abuse of a child.
ADD, 11:50a - Chucky kindly linked to this story, noting that this is yet another instance of the haters and the defenders finding themselves on the same side.

The baby is clearly Photoshopped into the various hot tub shots... IIRC, *all* of the baby shots are P'shop jobs in one way or another.

I recall the same, Mr. F, but have no way of confirming without seeing the movie again and I didn't want to overstate. I did ask a couple of colleagues for their memories before I wrote this entry.

Hot tub or not, GLAAD has gotten into bed with a gang of censorship advocates.

I'm not gay (like Straight Dave I am "proud to be hetero." Har har!). I don't want to speak for them.
That being said I would think the fact that Bruno is 100% comfortable with himself, who he is and doesn't try to hide it a positive message that over rides the "stereotypes." Even when:
(SPOILER)
he tries to be hetero to further his desire for fame, he realizes he is who he is. Correct me if I am wrong (I mean that genuinely), but there is a struggle when a person realizes they may be/are gay, is their not? Isn't there still a struggle when a gay man/women's career or life goals are challenged by a culture of unacceptance?
(END SPOILER)
His ideas of gay sex seem to be more his own recreations, perhaps, of gay pornography. Which again, to me, makes him even more real as many men (and women) do the same thing in relation to hetero porn.
I'm not trying to paint this as a deep character study or anything. But even as he is a stereotype, he also is proud, happy and not afraid to be himself. There is a bit of a charter arc. And the last line in the movie (sung by a very well-chosen cameo) asserts the message.
That's just me. And as a bonus, it is extremely funny.

2 more things: the hot tub pic is 100% photoshop. In no way did it look otherwise. It still could be considered over the line. Legally, it's a fine line choice. But it is not real.
And even thought they were 100% real people....the rednecks at the wrestling match were pretty fucking sterotypical as well. They are represented without redemption, and conceivably picket for their own depiction.
Personally, I hate rednecks so I'm all for the guy who looks like he's crying.

I agree 100% with DP about the baby in the car scene of The Hangover. On the other hand, its telling that the film immediately solves the 'how do we avoid having the audience constantly worry about the welfare of this baby' problem in the next scene or two.

The baby also get's hit with a car door.
I also think Bruno is a better parent than the Heather Graham charter would be.
I still loved Hangover, though.

My favorite bit in BRUNO (and also an incredible missed opportunity) was the singling out of Travolta, Cruise and Spacey as successes as celebrities because they are . . . straight!
If only they had taken the trip down the "Scientologists!" lane as well.

Just back from Bruno, which I thought was pretty one-note and not all that smart, although it did offer several laugh-out-loud moments.
That said, the protests are absurd.
Re: the hot tub and photoshopping, The New York Times story by Brooks Barnes linked at this blog a couple weeks ago contained this line:
"The sequence flashes back to Brüno having sex in a hot tub while the baby sits nearby. (A person who worked on the movie noted that the flashback consists of still images that were photoshopped – no baby was actually present – and that the sex is only strongly implied.)"
FYI and FWIW.

What about getting past the gay/straight thing, as regards to "Bruno?" It has very little to do with being gay and a lot more to do with him being a dope. And I think how viewers feel about nudity, sex, silliness, maybe even babies will have way more to do with their reactions than whether they're gay or straight.
