Detail: Films That Grossed 3x Opening Or Worse, Opening $40m And Over
There was a comment about Batman Returns having a huge opening (#1 ever at the time) and then not grossing as much as some expected. In fact, the film had a 3.54x multiple of opening. These days, that would be quite good. Even in the Batman franchise, it is the 3rd best, behind only the first Burton Batman and the first Nolan Batman Begins. It is, actually a better multiple than The Dark Knight (3.37x opening). One could argue that TDK's $158m opening disqualifies it from comparison, but as I noted before, both TDK and Returns were the biggest opening of all-time when they were released.
In any case, I though this statistical look would be interesting for some of you. Of course, most of the 2009 movies will improve their multiple, especially the two films that opened in the last two weekends. But you'll figure that out for yourselves.
You'll note that only one Batman film has done less than 3x opening and that you'll see a lot of sequels on this list.... you also note than fewer than one-third of the films to do less than 2.5x opening are from any years before 2006.

The strangest thing is when you compare Batman Returns to Batman Begins. Both dropped 45% in their second weekend. For Batman Returns, that was a cataclysmic drop that sent shock waves through the industry. But, 13 years later, the 45% drop for Batman Begins was a sign that the film had positive word of mouth/legs.

It's tough to make a direct comparison, what with all the Wed and Thurs openings on your list.
