A New One On Me
The Blu-ray of the Anna Boden/ryan fleck film, Sugar, just landed on my doorstep... and on the cover, quotes from the legend and current Philadelphia Phillie, Pedro Martinez ("It's really good and has a really good message.") and NY Yankee 2nd baseman Robinson Cano ("A Great Film!").
There are also quotes from People, The NY Times, and Sports Illustrated.
At least there is no quote from Peter Travers, who has turned himself into the new Earl Dittman... a sure sign of studio desperation.

My favorite quote situation came back in 2001 when I was working for Jami Bernard. I was at a store and saw the DVD for Christopher Nolan's Following. The box featured a quote from Jami.
I told her about it the next day. In complete baffled sincerity, she looked at me totally blank and admitted she had no recollection whatsoever of having seen the film. In fact, she was convinced she hadn't seen it, let alone written a review.
I had to dig out her tiny capsule from her Daily News archives to prove it. It was a couple of sentences long way back from when it played Film Forum.
Even then, all she could offer was a shrug.

I will never, ever know the source of this quote, but my favorite VHS box cover blurb EVER was: "The thinking man's 'Rocky IV'" on, what I believe, was the 1992 Christopher Lambert film "Knight Moves" where Lambert plays a chess master trying to help police stop a serial killer haunting a chess tournament.
I have no idea who gave the blurb and, in recent years, I've doubted that it was even on "Knight Moves" as I've never seen the quote again, but to call something "the thinking man's 'Rocky IV'" is not only great, but to have folks then slap it on the box art is even better.

Cano & Martinez may be on to something. SUGAR (about Dominican minor-league prospect/phenom) is rated 93% Fresh on RT. Writer/Director team Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden debuted with the acclaimed HALF NELSON, which got Ryan Gosling an Best Actor Oscar nom.

Half Nelson is quite possibly my favorite movie of the past five years. The motel scene at the end is just one of the most heartbreaking, well-acted and well-directed denouements I've seen on film.
It's shot in a cinema veritee style, but unlike Bahrani's first two films or all of the Dardenelles brothers films, the characters are allowed to be articulate and funny. And occasionally the film allows an artistic flourish that feels just right - like the kids in the class giving reports to the camera about civil rights history.
Just terrific. I can't wait to see Sugar.

Yet another movie that will probably never get a release here.
