Friday Estimates by Klady (More Blind)

friest120509.png

It's "Eat Your Spinach" week at the box office. There was candy last week, with the biggest Thanksgiving ever, and there will be candy in the weeks to come with Avatar, The Princess & The Frog, Up In The Air, Sherlock Holmes, It's Complicated, and Chipmunks: The Squeakquel all likely to be strong performers.

But this first week of December... there have been some openings to over $10m... but basically... withdrawal of movie affection for a week. When a 58% Fri-to-Fri drop is the strong play of the day, you know it's a slow weekend.

Still, The Blind Side could be Sandy Bullock's #2 film of her career, domestically, by the end of the weekend. After early reports that Brothers would be opening under $7 million, it will open closer to $10 million. Everybody at Miramax isn't fine, so the soft opening of the not-so-great Tornatore remake isn't much of shock. And Up In The Air is going to do nearly a million bucks on 15 screens for a $60K+ per screen.

No box office numbers of "The Last Station"(which opened on 12/4/2009)?

Twilight dropped 58% on its third Friday, while New Moon dropped yet another 70%. What's the record for the biggest second-to-third weekend drop anyway? Not that it matters when it's already grossed so much, but to go from $142 million in weekend one to around $15 million in weekend three is pretty shocking even in this day and age. And 6/10 films above have 70%+ drops. I know the post-Thanksgiving weekend is pretty brutal as a matter of course, but I don't think I've ever seen such a thing.

Scott: You have to remember -- over the long Thanksgiving weekend, lots of extended families go to the movies together. The weekend after? Not so much.

Also, those are just the Friday drops. I think the drops won't be so bad once the weekend numbers are in.

True enough, Brack. And last Friday was a holiday for many people.

Right guys, but it still doesn't change the fact that "Twilight" opened on the same weekend and only dropped 58% Black Friday to Post-Black Friday...

Congrats to "Transylmania" on the worst box office release in at least 1,000 theatres in the history of Hollywood!!!

... And now New Moon could struggle to top Half-Blood Prince.

Tehehehehehehe.

They can take solace in knowing they'll still probably wipe the floor with Delgo's staggering $237 PSA

(relatively speaking)

After watching The Fantastic Mr Fox, I think Wes Anderson has found his true genre.
Now if he could only combine animation with a naked Natalie Portman....

Hmm according to mojo "Transylmania" had a $94 Friday average...could be tight if all the "Dorm Daze" fans rushed out at once haha.
