Karina Longworth Fills Scott Foundas' LA Weekly Chair

I'm not sure quite what to make of this choice.

it seems kinda obvious. And it seems kinda interesting. I kinda get that they weren't really serious about hiring someone over 40 for the job. Given that, I wonder whether this was a choice to hire another blogger more than a critic.

That's not to say that Karina can't cut it as a critic. But it's not what makes her a boldfaced name. At least not yet.

What does the job mean? Well, it has been a stepping stone for a number key critics. Manohla is in the top handful of critics in the country now. Scott Foundas just got the "heir apparent" slot at NYFF.

It will be interesting to see how Karina chooses to integrate into this community. I will be rooting for her and for her best work to be in the future.

Anne Thompson called it from the very beginning.

YAAAAAAAY! GOOD CHOICE.

Since she will be moving to L.A., anyone know if she's single? I have some Outback coupons if she doesn't mind that my passenger side door doesn't open and she'll have to slide across the seat in THE 1990 TAURUS.

Karina is tops!

Would Ella Taylor never have been considered? I'm not being an advocate, just curious.

Love Ella, but I don't think she would want the job. She is very busy with her daughter as well as what is now a successful freelance career. But that job, especially with cuts at VVM, is a heavy load.

And I sincerely think that they were looking for youth. There are a lot of veterans out there, but they cost more, need better insurance, and are not used to building readership online, which is, I suspect, what they are expecting from Karina more than anything... a strong web presence that can build into something culty.
