The President of Bolivia On Avatar
This landed in the e-mail box from Bolivia today. It;'s a story on Bolivian president Evo Morales going to see Avatar, which as best I can tell, is the first movie he has seen in a movie theater in more than three decades and one of three ever. (He will not be blogging for MCN anytime soon.)
The Google translation is below. I am resisting my urge to edit it, as I think it may kind of fun for you all to do on your own.
This is the kind of article that, as a supporter of the film and a person irritated by the right trying to attack the film on all kinds of hyper-hypocritical grounds, I should have probably have left in the inbox. But I think the movie can survive a little capitalism bashing from Bolivia.
=========
Bolivia's President Evo Morales will feel identified with the theme of the film "Avatar," the latest film by James Cameron and the second has generated more income than ever, today informed the state agency ABI.
Morales came for the third time in his life to the cinema to see "Avatar", according to ABI, and commented that, despite having a "high dose of fantasy, the film is" a profound sign of resistance to capitalism and the struggle for the defense of nature. "
The indigenous leader, who went to the movies on Sunday with her daughter, Eva, Liz, 15, and a cousin of hers, found in the argument of "Avatar" parallels "with his struggle for the protection of Mother Earth and against capitalism. "
The film, which was devised by the ticket manager for fifteen years, tells the story of the planet Pandora, where humans, indigenous and avatars are fighting for their survival.
The plot of the film faces two ways of looking at development and coexistence with nature.
According to ABI, years ago that the Bolivian president was not going to a movie theater and the first time he did was in the 70s to see a biopic about the Brazilian soccer player Edson Arantes do Nascimento 'Pele'.
Morales, who was declared last year, "World Hero Mother Earth" by the UN, has taken his fight for the rights of nature in various international fora, including the recent climate summit in Copenhagen.
Precisely because of what he considers a "failure" of this global forum, the Indian leader has called a conference in Bolivia in April next year to discuss the creation of a "climate justice tribunal" and an international referendum on measures to protect the environment.

Cameron is probably the only guy who could get away with "killing Jesus" and "attacking Capitalism" and still have a career.

Killing Jesus?

Exactly. Most people probably already forgot about his involvement with:

Also, I said "killing Jesus" not killing Jesus.

bloody hell, gonzo, you and nicol should start a club
cameron executive produced the documentary - which means precisely squat - and you say he's getting away with "killing jesus"? lame

oh and btw, the documentary, which i've seen, about the archaeological find is actually quite interesting, and in no way 'kills jesus'

leahn, again you completely missed the point. I know that Cameron "only" produced the documentary and I've well aware of its content.
However, during the short lived backlash that followed it's release, I have read numerous comments and blog postes wherein people, and I quote, occused Camerson of "trying to kill Jesus" (by implying that he was a mortal man, etc) - these weren't my words. These people obviously didn't care what role Cameron played it was enough for them that he was associated with it.
All I was really saying was that unlike most religious controvesies this one went away suprisingly fast. I wasn't saying anything else.

again I'VE completely missed the point?
that's priceless, gonzo, you can fuck right off
you said this:
"Cameron is probably the only guy who could get away with "killing Jesus" and "attacking Capitalism" and still have a career."
and then this:
"Exactly. Most people probably already forgot about his involvement with:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_Tomb_of_Jesus
Also, I said "killing Jesus" not killing Jesus."
so from those sparse comments above, i'm supposed to extrapolate this as your meaning?:
"However, during the short lived backlash that followed it's release, I have read numerous comments and blog postes wherein people, and I quote, occused Camerson of "trying to kill Jesus" (by implying that he was a mortal man, etc) - these weren't my words. here's a thought: why don't you just say what mean from the beginning rather than trying to be somehow cryptic and clever, then perhaps you would not be understood! did it occur to you that perhaps I'M not the one missing your point but that YOU are doing a piss-poor job of making your point? christ on a cracker

leah, seeing as how you are the only one here frequently "confused" by what I'm saying how about you actually try to use your brain for once?
I wasn't trying to be clever. To me, anyone who is semi-familiar with the documentary and controversy that surrounded it should have understood what I meant. I really doubt that my explnation above was all that necessary and if you didn't get it then so be it. I am not interested in writing an essay if I don't think one is necessary and I don't understand why you even care so much in the first place.
If something isn't clear I'm glad to explain it. You jumped on my back even before I had a chance to clarify myself to DP. That's why I said you "missed my point". Considering the circumstances, that's hardly the worst insult I could have given you.

wow, you're quite the patronising little weenie, aren't you gonzo?
i can't recall having been 'confused' by anything you've said before this, tho i have disagreed with you once or twice, i guess. if you think you made your point clearly above, not only are you a bit of a prick but also a bit of a thickie

oh, and "you jumped on my back even before I had a chance to clarify myself to DP"
seriously, can your read? look at the order of comments. i commented AFTER you responded to DP

Is it that time of the month? I'm really curious. That's a lot of anger over something so minor. It gotta be either hormonal or chronic. In any case, you clearly wanted a fight and now you'll get one.
So you claim not to be confused and yet you were drawing completely wrong conclusions based on something I supposedly didn't explain well (heck one would think you'd have at least waited until AFTER I've clarified them for your sake before saying that they didn't mean squat) but I guess that's just not your style. When I rightfully (and calmly) said that you missed the point you started cursing.
Who's the thickie here, bitch?
(Why do you even need this in the first place?)

I'm not even going to bother reading any more of your crap. Done.

lol
wow, who's the angry one?
why so serious, gonzo? fragile ego much? maybe it's your 'time of the month' (sexist wanker time, perhaps?)
(btw, at no point was i even close to being angry, hilarious. if a guy had written the exact same things, would you react like that? doubtful. but i guess you can condescend to me all you like, "leah, AGAIN you completely missed the point; "leah seeing as you're the only one frequently confused how about you use your brain"...ah, you can dish it out but you can't take it, esp. from a girl it would seem)
and really, this sentence is the topper:
"So you claim not to be confused and yet you were drawing completely wrong conclusions based on something I supposedly didn't explain well"
stunningly inane

Holy crap dude, patronizing much?
Everyone here makes posts where they aren't as clear as they could be - me, you, leah, Lex, DP... EVERYONE.
Don't be a douche and claim it's the readers' fault. Just sort out the confusion and move on. If you can't contribute to the conversation without insulting someone, you may want to think about not posting.
(That doesn't just go for Gonzo either)
